Does anyone own/use/tried WordPerfect? It sounds 'too good to be true' in the
ads and I would like to hear what others have to say. Personal opinions count
(for a change, grin) !

Since WordPerfect is not out yet, the only ones that have used it are the
developers of it and the beta testers.

I have used WordPerfect quite a bit in the Messy-DOS world and like it a lot. I
have heard from someone who has a beta-test version for the Amiga that it is
quite similar to the IBM version. Consequently, if you are looking for a
text-oriented WP (unlike the other products with graphics capabilities) and are
willing to spend the $$, you will be pleased with its abilities.
Hmmm… that's a lot of dollars to spend on a straight IBM port.

WordPerfect buffers the document to disk, so one is not limited by memory
size. I don't know of any native-Amiga wordprocessors I can buy now which will
let me write a book as a single document, without breaking it into chapters
etc.

Alan, before you go and plunk down the mega $$ for Word Perfect, look at the ad
on Page 8 of AmigaWorld Special Issue – It's called DesignText and will do just
about everything Word perfect will do, plus NLQ printing on just about ANY dot
matrix printer (Whether it supports it or not) plus a DataBase and 90,000 word
dictionary. (All for $79 US!)

Brian, could you be more specific about what DesignText does than the ad
states, please? I'd ask in a private msg, but they are disabled here. I need a
good, efficient, (and painfree to boot-up) WP.

If you want to reply to a message in private, you can use mail. Just type RE
at the prompt, compose your message, and then instead of using S or SU to store
it, use MA to have it sent via Easyplaex.

I have used WordPerfect on IBM for two years. Amiga version is supposed to
have all the capabilities of last year's IBM version (4.1) plus windows so it
nets out to about equal with this year's IBM version (4.2). Thesaurus and
spelling checker work rapidly, 210 different printers are supported, footnotes
and endnotes in same document, table of contents and index generators, center
page top to bottom, conditional end-of-page …
What sort of work do you foresee doing?
In this case, "too good to be true" turns out to be accurate. I've been using
the MS-DOS version for some time and flat out haven't found another program
that can match it for working with text. If you want graphics, so sorry. The
spell-checker is the best in the biz (IMHO) and the thesaurus is excellent.
According to any information released so far, WP on the Amiga will incorporate
everything the current 4.2 version for MS-DOS has, except for line numbering
and (memory fails be) index generation. As a result, the Amiga version will
produce 4.1 compatible documents (which can be read by 4.2). This is the same
restriction that will be on the Atari ST version.
However, WordPerfect is also working on version 5.0, and rumors are flying that
it will incorporate major additions, including moves towards deskstop
publishing (in response to all that Microsoft's Word 3.0 will do). The design
for the Amiga and ST were frozen at 4.1 compatibility to bring them to market
ASAP (which is VERY late right now). Both will come up to 5.0 some time next
year (5.0 on MS-DOS will be available late-'87, early-'88).
Less this scare you off, remember that WP provides superior product support,
including a liberal upgrade policy for later revisions.
