This is really getting tedious. You keep talking about an 'in crowd', and
saying that we think it's 'in' to bash programs.
I can assure you that there have been good comments made about a great many
programs, including WP, and by the very people you say are part of the 'in
crowd'. The flames would not have been nearly as hot if you yourself had not:
1. accused people of lying about bugs.
2. shrugged off serious problems as being of minor importance
3. shrugged off shortcomings as 'cosmetic defects'
4. kept raving about how absolutely super good WP is
That sort of head-in-the-sand attitude will definitely bring out the flames
henry. Count on it. We are talking here about a commercial program, a high
priced commercial program, not some pd screen hack that occasionally locks up
your machine. We are talking about a program for which users put out a lot of
money, and that was not, and is not yet, done right.
It's all fine and good that WP Corp is addressing at least some of the
problems that have been reported here, but the question remains; why are you
so insistent that it is the greatest program around when you yourself have
seen the bugs and agreed that they are indeed bugs. I can understand your
raving about the quality of support, but not about the quality of the
program.
It was not long ago that you were griping away about having to reboot, and
about having GURUs, yet you excuse a GURU or a hang in WP as being a 'minor
problem' and saying 'Oh well, it's being worked on". No bleeding wonder you
garner flames both for yourself and the product! It isn't like the program
came out yesterday.

I had HOPED to move myself away from the WordPerfect discussion
completely, yet you insist on bringing it back. I've been enjoying
WordPerfect discussions elsewhere with constructive people bent on
constructive criticisms with people who actually use the product.
It appears as though it's OK and fun and fine to flame, but if anything
even REMOTELY hits close to home then defenses flare, including significant
misinformation – saying that I accused people of lying about bugs. Something
I have NEVER EVER done. You've conveniently tried to twist what I was
getting at around to ancient tired rhetoric.
And it's funny because I haven't even tried or begun to stoop to the
_adolescence_ of calling anyone or anything here "worthless doo doo", which
are terms used to describe developers in AmigaForum on an occasional basis.
"Do unto others as long as you don't even remotely do unto me." What's even
funnier (or sadder, as you choose to look at it) is that whenever someone
attacks a product with the above-exampled language there are peripheral
messages in the form of jokes and support given to the person.
The bottom line is that the negative energy flows around here like you
wouldn't believe. It seems that every other message is filled with
frustration and negative remarks and I'm NOT (NOT NOT NOT NOT) referring only
to WordPerfect. And "frequenters" to the forum back up and support that
negativism on a regular basis. Yet when something positive happens, it
usually ends with that particular message.
Do you think this isn't having an effect? I know *2* people locally who
read the messages here on a regular basis, but are absolutely petrified as
new users to speak out and say anything. Of course if they say "hello" they
will get a warm reception, a very warm one, and lots of help, but they are
scared to get involved in discussions because they feel that they and their
remarks will be belittled and mocked. Those feelings are from a DIRECT
RESULT of the negative energy that's proposed and propogated.

Did you yourself jump in and say anything even remotely positive about
Interceptor? No, of course, you jumped in with the remark about EA
constructing a frame and rushing a product out to the streets. There are
PLENTY of other ways to phrase that particular criticism – how about
"Interceptor probably shows what the Amiga really can do. It's great we are
finally seeing software on this level. If only they'd listen to us and
include our suggestions, like the important suggestion for analog support."
No of course not – wham bang, knee-jerk, negative sarcasm. Instantly. NO
second thought – and there are plenty of wonderful things about Interceptor,
and things that no other computer could possibly do.
Where were the messages of support and request for additional information
when I talked about Phasar?
Where was the positive energy around the Silver conference in the message
base? How about the William Hawes conference? I saw NOTHING (tho there may
have been a message or 2.) Heck I don't even remember seeing a summary of
what happened.
Where was the positive information about Ferrarri when we were discussing
it awhile back?
Anyone have any POSITIVE comments about AmigaDOS 1.3 for Christ sake,
instead of listing what WAS NOT done with it?
Anyone have any POSITIVE comments about Empire which was just released?
No, of course not – very little information except of course a little note
from you that it is protected, with the "protect" in single quotes, I assume
implying that it's not disk based. Was there a message "finally a
multitasking fun game"? No.
I hope you realize this is "constructive" criticism in any event. It's
not fun, easy, I'm not sitting back here laughing and giggling with every
word. There are some problems that need to be addressed. No doubt about it.
I think the bottom line is that when I buy a software package, I (at least)
EXPECT it to perform as advertised. If it does, all is well and good. If it
doesn't, it DESERVES to be raked across the coals.
I think WP has been nit picked, flamed and shot down enough for the moment.
Suffice it to say that I am looking for another wordprocessor (I simply can't
afford to reboot the computer every time I want to work on files >20K.)
I managed to get my hands on a copy of Excellence! to try out the other day.
Brought it home, loaded it, and tried to load a document. It decided I
didn't have enough memory. (A500 & 501) Checked further, and found it wanted
every bit of my CHIP RAM (less 25K) but left me with >150K of FAST RAM. If
it won't load a document on my system, it isn't for me. Will pass up buying
this package..
Re Interceptor, Empire, et al. I haven't even seen them available around
here, so can't comment one way or the other. It is a half-day trek to any
reasonably well supplied vendor and back from here, so I don't get to the
computer shop as often as I'd like.
Sacred Cows. There are, apparently some sacred cows on this forum. ASDG
appears to be one, though the only things I've seen available from them are
the 2 Mb expansion memory board (through Micron) and FACC – everything else
I've heard they have is still under development. Ask a question about their
products, and the response comes out, "because they make d**n fine stuff."
Well, that may be true but you couldn't prove it by me.
WB 1.3. As far as I know, it's vapor. I keep hearing about it, but it isn't
available. Thus, it's vapor.
SCSI Controllers. The 2090 seems to be the thing in this forum, even though
it apparently can't do low level formatting of ST506 drives. Besides, I have
a 500 and commodore don't make an expansion cage to stick the 2090 in. Lots
of negative vibes about C Ltd. Virtually nothing about anyone else. (The
sacred cow seems to have one "under reevaluation" but I haven't seen or heard
much about that.)
TAPCIS work-alike. It's gonna be available "RSN". Same response I've been g

getting for almost 6 months now. I'd like it – I need it, but it remains in
the vaporous realm. Have stopped holding my breath waiting for it.
NewTek. I like DigiView. Most people talk about Video Toaster as if it were
available at every five and ten cent store. As I can't even seem to find the
specs for the silly thing, it's vapor to me.
ProWrite. I got this one mostly because it claims to be able to import HAM
graphics into the text. It does, but immediately ruins the HAM image if you
try to resize to your needs or even move the graphic to when you need it in
the document. At least it isn't as costly as WP or Excellence!
Shakespeare. I've managed to get it to print out exactly 1 short text-only
document. It appears to eat all the memory in establishing a printout
protocol. Absolutely useless to me with my current system. ,
I guess I could go on and on, but you get the idea. If it worked right, and
met my requirements, there would be no point in bringing it out. If it doesn
't, then I think others should be informed before they might make a costly
mistake for themselves.]
Gee a wealth of mini-software reviews. Perhaps you can work on one and flesh
it out for my on-line magazine (first issue appearing RSN.)
