DPaint 4.1 problem

I just got around to installing my DPaint 4.1 upgrade and am experiencing a frustrating problem. When I try to draw a circle, it jumps from one size to another instead of being a gradual sizing. For example, it jumps from 3/8" to 3/4" to 2", rather than going gradually larger or smaller. What gives here? The specific sizes I just stated are just estimated examples. Please help. Its impossible to work with like this. The first freehand tool (the ….) has the same quirk, but if I shift to the continuous freehand line, it goes gradual. In other words, it is like it is limited to placing the color pixels on a large grid, and won't draw them between the grid lines (this is describing the …… tool). John L

John, Just a guess, but do you have snap to grid set? I'm not even sure that would cause your problem. Just shooting from the hip. Ron

re: snap to grid option… I tried looking through the menus for that option and could not find it. I assumed that the option didnt exist then. I will try the index manual. Snap to grid must be on. I hate it when drawing software sets that as a default. They must have done that with DP4.1. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion; that must be it. John

John, Grid snap is on the tool bar just above the magnifying glass tool. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Ahoy Paul,I'm assembling a tape of NEW stuff to send you.Should make ye put that new 4000 to MORE use hehehehehehe BTW I got a INCREDIBLE Enterprise 1701D object yesterday. It was created by a lady named Carmen Rizzolo and is Incredibly Detailed and has all windows, lights and insignia. No Brushmaps are used either. The object IS 1.67 Megs tho.But the results are WORTH it.BTW this is an Imagine object.

"Lucifer, kill those Pesky Humans" Bat Galactica always reminds me of a Video Game where the Villian "Evil Ed" would say "Get the Humanoid" then when he Stomped you would say "Got the Humanoid" in a suitably metallic robotic voice. Back on topic do you know of any Models or Garage Kits Available of a Cylon?Or a Tri View Blueprint perhaps?I'd like to try my hand at modeling the Cylon.Have a Mess of em invade a LIVE action Scene with a Genlock.

Peter, No, and boy do I wish I had picked up and put away all those SciFi models when they were first released! One of my students is Alexa Price-Whelan, Michael Whalen's daughter. They attend a few major SciFi cons each year. I'll ask her to look out for a Cylon for me. The hobby RT is basic rate service over on that other network (Thank God, since my wife's quilting topics are over there. Would you believe 200 messages a day!) I'll bet if we dropped by over there we could get a line on some mail order places that deal in that sort of stuff. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Thanx for the tip on the modeling/hobby RT

Isn't that a great a object. Quality work, and HUGE. It won't even fit in Lightwave. Just wait till you animate. –Paul
#25890From: Anthony RamirezJan 22, 1993 2:40 PM
Someone has already converted it to LightWave but I am told that if you have enough memory it will load, isn't LW's polygon limit dependant on how much memory you have? I thought that was one of the 2.0 features. <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>
#25979From: Paul ToalJan 25, 1993 5:42 AM
You think it should load? I have 32 megs, so that probably isn't the problem. I just get an error when loading. I'll try some more. I have been using InterChange Plus. It's not the first object I had trouble converting. Just chokes on the save. –Paul
#25993From: SyndesisJan 25, 1993 9:19 AM
In the InterChange manual, we warn that although you may have enough memory to convert an object, you may not be able to load the object into your rendering program, or even if it's loaded, it may not be able to render it completely, in a given amount of memory.

Thanks for checking up on me. The problem is when it writes the file as a LW file. I get an error on edge 90026 of 9005, error 8……8. Any thoughts on this?
#26027From: SyndesisJan 26, 1993 11:48 AM
If you've upload that huge Enterprise object, I'd be glad to check it out. There was an older bug relating to the creation of lone edges and points when converting to LightWave format. It can be remedied in the field by turning off the checkmark gadgets for lone points/edges on the LightWave Converter, but we've also released an update that removes the bug. It certainly shouldn't do that, and I want to be sure our current release has the bug, before I start searching for something that isn't there… "Edge 90026 of 9005" doesn't quite make sense, the first number should be smaller, always.
#26000From: Anthony RamirezJan 25, 1993 2:28 PM
We are talking about converting Carmen's Enterprise object to LightWave format, right? I have Pixel-3D Pro and was able to convert it to LW format but since I don't have my Toaster hooked up yet I couldn't test it to see. You might want to try a point of faces reduction to see if this helps. <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>

I have animated it.The 300 Frame Anim of Carmen Rizzolo's incredible NCC1701D Enterprise object took an Average of 11 minutes a frame to render on my A3000/25 mhz in Scanline mode at DCTV 736*482 REZ. The same object RAYTRACED at 1200*1500 REZ in 24 bit color took nearly 2 hours.
#25959From: Leslie T. BartiromoJan 24, 1993 9:44 AM
Any chance oof you uploading your Enterprise animation?!
#25962From: Paul GerhardtJan 24, 1993 12:57 PM
Leslie, I am sure both Peter and I could fill a good part of the library with anim files. The problem is FILE SIZE. Even using DCTV (which cuts the files down greatly) my anims run from 1 to 14 megs in size. Unless CIS gives a special rate for anim downloading there is no easy way for animators to share their work. That is why Peter & I swap video tapes of our work. Maybe I am wrong. How many out there WOULD download anim files that averaged 5 megs? …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-
#26001From: Anthony RamirezJan 25, 1993 2:28 PM
The anims I have done also in DCTV average about the same, I had one that was 18 megs but couldn't play since I only had 14 at the time. As far as d/l'ing them, I don't think I would and I connect at 9600. It would probaly be better to just u/l a complete project. <<< Tony D. Tracer >>>
#26030From: Leslie T. BartiromoJan 26, 1993 1:28 PM
Hmm. I see what you mean. It's a shame. What do you use to cordinate an animation that big? Is it all one huge anim file for is there some sort of provision to run such large animations via DCTV?
#26034From: Paul GerhardtJan 26, 1993 4:59 PM
Lesilie, I am not sure what you mean by "coordinate an animation". If you mean where do I store and render them, I use an 80meg Quantum for work in progress and rendering. Once completed they are moved to a Syquest cartridge. If you are referring to how I get them on tape, each "shot" is one animation file. If you look at commercial TV you'll see shots rarely last longer than a few seconds. With 18megs in my 4000 I can play DCTV anims that are long enough to make shots up to 10 to 30 seconds long. Thats more than enough for a single shot. I then record them to my Sony R-5 super VHS deck on at a time. …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Not me thats for sure. Not unless I had a super duper FAST Modem and didn't get penalized for being fast by having a higher hourly rate.
#25964From: Peter GreciJan 24, 1993 1:17 PM
Leslie First off my Enterprise Anim is in DCTV format so that leaves out ALOT of folks. Then it's over 2 megs which I doubt many people will spend that kind of $$$ just to see a silly Fly By Anim of that object.Thats why I rarely UL anims anymore. My Anims Average 2 megs and up.
#26031From: Leslie T. BartiromoJan 26, 1993 1:28 PM
Too bad (for me.) Do you NEED DCTV to view a DCTV anim? I don't own DCTV and know very little about it.
#26040From: Peter GreciJan 26, 1993 8:57 PM
Yes you need DCTV to view a DCTV Anim.If you view a DCTV anim on a DCTV less setup you will get a weird looking display since DCTV takes 16 color Hi rez screen and uses a compression scheme to get in the neighborhood of 3 million or so colors.

I've seen that object, it is absolutely awesome! It requires at least 10 megs & the patience of a rock to render! ====>>> Motorola 68030 Inside <<<====
#25898From: Peter GreciJan 22, 1993 4:50 PM
Not really Steve. It took a mere 11 minutes a frame on my 3000 to render that huge Enterprise object at 736*482 Resolution.I just completed a 300 Frame DCTV anim of it in fact. The whole Shebang is a bit over 2 megs as an anim-5 animation.

This is going to sound strange, but is your SHIFT key sticking? Back when I was a regular DPaint user, sometimes my SHIFT or CONTROL key would stick and it would change certain tool's functions. Just a thought… Miguel
