Adaptec 4000 w/2090a
9 messages in this thread
Hi,
Can anybody help me out with this question ? I currently have a Adaptec
4000 ST506 to SCSI controller and I'm trying to hook it up to a Maxtor 1085
ST506 hard drive. The controller in my Amiga 2000 is the 2090a. I would
like to know if this should work and if anybody knows of any information
about the Adaptec that I need to change to get my drive working as a SCSI
drive. || BY THE **+++++ Judd Pape +++++** BY THE

Judd,
Yes, the Adaptec will work. There is one major caveat though, in that the
Adaptec requires a MODE SELECT command with particular data before it will
accept a low level format, so you will have to low-level format it on
another controller.

Or use a host adapter and formatting software from someone who has taken
the idiosyncrasies of the Adaptec into account. 😉
Craig
Craig,
I just purchased an Advantage 2000, and was trying to use it with an
OMTI 3520, which was then connected to a Seagate ST225. When I ran the
software, it recognized the OMTI device correctly. I then selected ST225
as the drive type, and clicked FORMAT. It warned me about losing all data,
then displayed FORMATTING… for a second. The drive light went on, then
shut off, and the message FORMAT ERROR–SENSE CODE $19 showed up. What's
this mean? The OMTI has the jumper selected for device #1, and the drive
has the select jumper in the first position.
I have a Quantum 40s on the way, so it's not imperitive that the ST225
works, but I'd like to know what the error code means, perhaps telling me
where the error is.

Andrew,
Mode Sense 19 (hex) is 'defect list error' meaning that something
was wrong with the defect list kept on the drive (probably not there yet
since this was apparently your first use of the Omti-ST225 combo).
I can't help you on why you got this error, Craig should be able to
assist you on that though.
Don
Don,
Thanks for the info…is there a list of these sense error codes?
Perhaps in the tech docs for the Amiga?
—Andrew
Andrew,
No, the sense codes are in a book sitting by my side on the SCSI
definition. This particular book is from AT&T, but the sense codes are
standardized for the most part.
Don
$19 for the Omti is a defect list read error. THis is a very rare thing.
It only happens when the drive has been previously formatted and a read
error occurs. Call the office for tech support and the provided number.
Jerry may be able to figure out how to reset this.
Craig
Ahh.. I take it yours does.. .that's good.
