#Big sampled sounds

David,
I liked your Bandstand sample. Nicely done. Just a suggestion for you,
though… Check out DiskPlay. (DISKPL.ARC in LIB 8) It's a neat sound
player which plays sounds directly off of disk. (Might need a hard disk to
keep up…) Takes up all of maybe 40K ram total, no matter how big the
sample. It played your Bandstand sample quite nicely… (Doesn't handle
stereo, though…)

I had considered DiskPlay, and have used it in the past. But (as you may
have mentioned) it doesn't handle stereo. The only way I could keep the
sound quality up with the sample was to increase it's size. Perfect Sound
however will only digitize so much depending on your memory free. Thus I
made Bandstand a Stereo sample (ie – the first half of the song is the LEFT
track, the second half is the Right) And since the SOUND playback programs
can break up stereo samples – and play the individual tracks back to back
(playing first the LEFT track, then the RIGHT), this was my best chance.
And because SOUND 4.3 plays off the disk just like DiskPlay (either
automatically or upon command) and still has all the features of the
original SOUND prog – plus a few new ones, I couldn't pass it up. I also
wanted to ensure that even a 512K Amiga could play it, and since 4.3 did
that (with NO interrupting gaps in real-time playback – unlike DiskPlay)
well, you get the picture.
So did you hear the whole thing or just the first half?
<Dave>
I heard the whole thing. DiskPlay treats stereo samples as one long
sample. A real stereo sample (designed to be played back in stereo) would
play first one channel than the other.
I wasn't aware that Sound 4.3 did playback from disk. (I'm not even sure
we have it here yet… I'll have to look.) If so, it may be time for me to
switch.

Steve,
I DL'd Sound v4.9 from this forum! (Not sure of the AArts title
anymore; I expand them to be more descriptive when I archive them!)
