The 3000 is actually shipping! 10 machines showed up at Amagination in New
York on Friday. I think 2 have been sold so far (I and my bleeding credit
card know for certain about one). The computers come with both 1.3 and
2.0.
There is something weird going on with 3.0. It comes with a Kickstart
disk, but if you just turn the 3000 on it loads Kickstart "2.x" into RAM.
Yes, you lose memory to RAM. I had been told you'd lose 512K, but when you
boot your status reads 945480 graphics mem, 248,848 other mem if you load
from ROM, 945,272 and 248160 if you use the Kickstart disk.
The packaging is great, including a poster – style quick set up and very
extensive docuementation. Now to see if it's accurate :-).
Anyway, I thought people would want to know that the beast has surfaced.

I believe that since you've got an early unit, you've got a prelease of 2.0
software. When 2.0 comes out for real (in September) you'll be able to
upgrade to the release version of 2.0 (which won't require you do load
anything like that into your own RAM).

The 3000's are in St. Louis too! As of Friday, the systems with deposits
on them started showing up (one is mine, I will pick it up next week).
So far the machines come without AmigaVision, but the store owner has a
coupon I can send back to CBM to get my free copy. I really just want to
get the machine in my hands first! 🙂

Amiga 500P systems are arriving with AmigaVision bundled! I have actually
seen the manual and the 4 distribution disks.
Lets just say that AmigaVision is the vision of tomorrow.

How do you like that 2.0 manual? I would be interested to hear some
feedback on it. I was absolutely blown away when I saw it for the first
time. An excellent chunk of documentation…looks good, feels good, and is
fairly extensive.

I'd agree with your impressions. So far, it looks very good. It's
certainly thick enough! One odd thing about the manual — it assumes you
are booting from floppies. I didn't know the 3000 came in a floppy only
configuration. In any event, I think the majority of users will be using
hard disks, and it is disconcerting to see documentation refering to disk
icons when you can only see partition icons on your Workbench.

I agree to a point. The manual (I assume) is going to be what is shipped
with the AmigaDos 2.0 upgrade kit when it becomes available for the other
machines. With this in mind, you have to take into account Amiga 500's
(mostly floppy based) and Amiga 2000's. The lowest common denominator has
to be served in this case. In the case of HD owners, sufficient reference
makes it possible for HD users to substitute floppy references for HD
references. Its hard to write a manual and always refer to both for both
scenarios. Note the 2.0 manual is NOT machine specific (i.e. even though it
comes shipped now with the A3000, it is generic enough to be the 'standard'
manual for the OS).

True enough, Jim. I fell into the trap of thinking of 2.0 as a 3000
specific product, which, of course, it isn't.

an upgrade in September? Is there any software that won't run under 2.0?
There will be an upgrade in September. The 3000 is being shipped with an
early version of 2.0, and 1.3 in case some software won't work under this
early version of 2.0.

Have you been down to TCR lately? Brett got in a production 3000, and it
looks real nice. last I was there he was still getting it setup, so I can't
tell you much, but you might want to stop in and see it.

Thanks. I was wondering if I should put aside my penneys for ADOS
2.0. I may not want it if it won't run some of my favorite software.
Well, until it's official, (or unless your a certified or commercial
developer OR unless you get a 3000), you don't have anything to worry
about….You'll know whether or not your software will run after 2.0 is
official….I'm sure there will be MANY notices here when 2.0 officially
ships.

There is supposed to be an upgrade in September, when 2.0 is scheduled to
be 'final'.
I haven't found any software that won't run yet, but I had to leave for the
National Educational Computing Conference less than 24 hours after setting
the 3000 up, so my testing has not been very extensive. Turbo Silver,
which didn't run under the Beta, does run in this version of 2.0. (That
was the one I was sweating.)

The T.S. info is good news. One of my favorite utilities is
Diskmaster and it would not run under the version of 2.0 one of my dealers
was using. Also Online! acted oddly and WordPerfect was useless.
Hooray and congratulations! By my calculations your household now has the
highest concentration of Amigas-to-population in the galaxy. (Don't tell
the fish they don't count.)
