#HD Backup under WB2.0

I have just just purchased the Amiga release 2 kit and upgraded my Amiga
2000 workbench and kickstart to version 2.05.
In the back of the Getting Started book which came with the above kit it
says that users of Quarterback version 4.2 and earlier may have problems
after performing a hard disc backup under WB2.0.
I have version 4.0 of Quarterback which has been working OK under WB1.3.
Please could you advise me if it is safe to continue using this or will I
need to upgrade. The above book says that version 4.3 corrects the problem
but doesn't say what the problem is.
I believe you are now up to version 5.x of Quarterback but I have not yet
received any official notification.

You mention that you upgraded to v2.05 of Workbench and Kickstart. When I
upgraded a few months ago, I got v2.04 of WB and the Kickstart ROM. I know
they upgraded the WB software to 2.05, but didn't know that they also
upgraded the ROM chip. Are you sure the ROM is 2.05? Or is it the 2.04 ROM,
but with the 2.05 WB software?

I am not sure whether the ROM is 2.05 as there is nothing on the chip to
indicate this. I just assumed it was when the I saw the discs marked up as
2.05. However, if it helps, my Kickstart version is 37.175 and the
Workbench version is 37.71.

Okay, that means you have a new WB, but the same KickStart ROM. My KS is
also v37.175, so you have the 2.04 ROM chip. However, my WB is v37.67 and
it's 2.04. So your WB v37.71 is a new version and it's 2.05. I wonder what
the differences are.

Hi Adrian,
Wow, from Luton, eh? I'm just up the A6 in Barton-le-Clay! Not sure about
the earlier versions of QB, but even 4.3 wasn't perfect under WB2. Under
certain circumstances, the floppies would be unavailable when exiting the
program. Just a minor irritation. I'm expecting v5 shortly.

Nice to hear from you. It's a surprise to get a message from someone
living so close when communicating via America! I wonder if there are any
other CIS members in the area?
I have had a reply from New Horizons Software regarding Quarterback 4.x
and WB2.x and they have assured me that the programme backs up and restores
OK, but as you said the floppy disc drives do lock up after use. I shall
have to send off for the v5 upgrade. Have you been waiting long for yours?

Wow, sorry, for the lengthy delay… I use an off-line reader called Whap!
which downloads all my messages for me, but I noticed the other day that
there was some text saying that I had an unread message. I naively assumed
that anything for me would automagically be retrieved for me, but it would
appear that this is not the case. Anyone else know if Whap! can be set up
to do this?
Anyway, I finally decided to come on live!, to sort it all out and here I
am. My QB 5.01 arrived a couple of weeks ago. It took a few weeks to
arrive, but I'm not going anywhere :-). It certainly looks very nice. I'm
having some trouble with it doing incrementals, but that is most likely my
fault. Let me know how you get on! Steve the G.
On the choose message sections screen, highlight the RM (read marked)
button (registered version only).

Just read your message. I am using Whap! also and although I had
problems when first using it and going through numerous definition runs, it
has always retrieved any messages for me.
With regards to QB 5, I think I shall wait a while before sending off
for my upgrade as people seem to be having problems with it, including
yourself I believe.

Yes, I did have a bit of a problem, but I managed to sort it out to my
satisfaction (took a couple of hours, though. I have just found out that
there is an upgrade to the version I have available for download, so I will
be getting hold of that later today. It's particularly nice when s/w
companies make upgrades available in this way (SAS are good like this
also). Mind you, it would be better still if the upgrades weren't necessary
🙂

We have determined that the 4.x versions work fine under Workbench 2.04
except that they do not know about links and 4.0-4.2 have a small problem
that causes no trouble with backups or restores. In these 4.0-4.2 version,
if you use floppy drives for backing up, these drive will be locked up
after exiting Quarterback. AmigaDOS cannot use them again until you
reboot. I repeat, though, this has no effect on backing up or restoring.
The drives work fine when Quarterback uses them.

Thankyou for your reply regarding Quarterback v4.0 and WB2. I shall be
sending off shortly for the v5 upgrade although I haven't yet received any
official notification from you. I trust I am still registered with you as I
haven't heard anything from your company since I upgraded to v4.0.

I am sure you are registered. From what I understand, we have not sent
notices to other countries yet. I think we may be waiting for the final
few bug fixes before we send international since upgrading the bug fixes
for international people can be can be expensive to our customers.
