Who has the best deals on an NEC-84 CD-ROM? I got a flyer from a co named SofTec Plus in Tuscon AZ showing $689 for the drive "complete with caddy, SCSI kit (which I don't need), and installation software". Is that a reasonable price?

CDW lists the CDR-83M at $499.16 with no controller. Someone I know tried to order this but was told that the CDR-84 was available instead, and at a lower price. I didn't get the new price, but it should be somewhat less that $499.

I don't think CDW will sell it at that price. When they have them I think they want $550. They also said the one slated to come in are spoken for. If you want one, you must prepay for it now. I have some bare drives on order should be around $500. Also some drives come with the SCSI adaptor, and cable. I think those are $589. Thanks, Jerry Cudmore

Stephen, I would also recommend CDW (Computer Discount Warehouse) at 1-800-776-4239. The price that I was quoted for the CDR84 was $485 on 25th May. Be aware that this is their cash price and you would have to add 3% for credit card purchase. This would make the drive $499 for a credit card purchase. I have talked to them several times and have always gotten good response over the phone although I hadn't purchased anything from them until now. Today I ordered several products from them (Colorado Memory Systems Jumbo 250 & tapes) and will see how well this works out. They seem to care about good service!! Glenn
