Dear Tim,
I live in the UK and use QB for all my backups. Having read all the
complaints about QB5.01, I would be very interested in finding a backup to
floppy system that can compress as it goes and then restore those files
without having to search through every disk.
If Ami-Back can offer this facility could you inform me if and how to
upgrade from QB here in the UK.

If I understand your question correctly, then the answer is yes Ami-Back
does this. Just because the data is compressed is no reason to be unable to
locate it. If you are using floppies, and you backed up your data using
compression, Ami-Back still knows what disk a particular file is on.

Does Ami-Back 2.0 allow multiple backups on one tape?
Yes it does, and it does not need script files to do multiple backups. It
also automatically spans tapes (in other words "insert Tape 2"). No other
backup program does this.
Thanks for the info! By the way, because I bought Ami-Back and a tape
drive about 3 weeks ago Gary told me to sent my origional disk back to him
with the registration card and I would get a free upgrade to 2.0. I
haven't received anything yet. Is 2.0 shipping and have you gotten my
disk? (The mailer says "Attention Gary Holland" on it.) Thanks again.
The upgrades were a few days late shipping and there were quite a few to
do. You can just imagine, esp with the competetive upgrade. If you have not
received anything in the next few days, leave me E-mail.
Thanks, Tim. It is interesting to me how Ami-Back and its major
competition can be used for the same thing yet take such different
approaches in their interface.

Although I got Ami-Back with my Moonlighter refurbished Viper in March, I
only just got around to returning the warranty card last week. Could you
send me Ami-Back 2.0 upgrade information by E-mail?

No we are not returning the disks. The $25 competetive upgrade is saving
you quite a few dollars. This policy is typical of such upgrades. I don't
think this will be a problem tho. Download the demo, be sure that Ami-Back
is the program you want to be your final backup program. I am quite certain
you will think so.

I hate sounding stupid, but what's so great with your backup software (or
anyone else's for that matter) for somebody that has a tape drive? I use
TAR, and with one simple command line I can back up my entire system, and I
can even add a CronTab entry and do it while I'm at work! I've tried GVP's
TapeStore, your AmiBack, and a couple of others (I don't remember their
names), and none of them worked as easy as TAR has for me. I don't recall
AmiBack exactly, but as I recall you had to backup each partition
separately, so on my system with 5 partitions it would require my hanging
around to start each partition. The same with TapeStore, Tar was the only
one that I found that could do it all from 1 command, so I could go away
for a while, come back to a fully backed up system. And of course there's
also the nice point of Unix interchangability, I've already used the
tapedrive to move stuff between AmigaDOS & Amiga Unix on my 3000 using Tar
(on both ends).

I've been using AmiBack with a tape drive for about six months, and it
backs up both my hard drives — a total of four partitions — in one shot.
Maybe you had AmiBack mixed up with something else..?

actual program. I just sort of like TAR, and don't understand all the
excitement is about all these new backup utilities is.

Hi Mike. About the excitement over new backup utilities, especially for
tape backups. Not everyone is comfortable with CLI or Shell, nor do they
get excited over fussing with mountlists or the multitudes of parameters
involved with CLI based applications. Although I'm quite comfortable doing
it that way (and was doing so before Ami-Back), I'm glad to see the Amiga
have these types of programs for those that aren't exactly CLI wizards.

Ami-Back has always done multi-partition backups with no use of scripts or
anything. It also has a graphic scheduler so that you would have to "hang
around" to make back ups. I think you might have it mixed up with something
else. There is a demo in database #9. There is also a press release here
listing its features.

From reading bits and pieces over the past couple of weeks on here I
think I'm begining to think that you are offering a deal where I would turn
in my QB disk and $25 to you and you would give me the latest version of
Ami-Back. Is this a fact or am I just making things up?
