Commodore 2090A autobooting controller with docs and installation software.
Just about the only way to use an ST506 hard drive on your Amiga. Works
fine with SCSI drives too. This controller is actually fairly fast. Just
$40. and while I'm at it…. A1020 5 1/4" external drive (440K Ados, 360K

Aha, I knew it! Actually the A1020 drive is very useful as a second 5
1/4" drive when connected to a Bridgeboard.

It will only function as a 360k drive with a Bridgeboard. Is there some
reason it would not work with the AT Bridgeboard? I have used it with the
XT and as a 440K Amiga drive.

There's no connector on the back of the AT Bridgeboard for the cable to
plug into.

Does that mean that you need to get a double cable to connect a second
floppy? I wonder why they left that connector off. It was pretty
convenient. Oops. I answered my own question.

Mark – for one thing, the AT bridgeboard does not have a drive port.

No drive port eh? Well, I only have the XT Bridge so I didn't know that
one. Still, a dual ribbon cable should hook up both drives.

A 1020 and Disk-2-Disk are very useful for transferring things from a C64
to Amiga, too. Wouldn't part with mine, since I use it for both
Bridgeboard and Amiga sides.

Mike, I'm sorry, but I just don't know. I've only tried it with the A1020
that came with the Transformer back in 1985 or 1986. But it works like a
champ with that one. I still have friends whom I can reach electronically
only on Quantum Link, and you can only access Quantum with a C64 – so I
often have need to transfer information between the two machines. The only
way I would know to find out about the drive would be to try it. Perhaps
you could take the drive to your dealer and try it out there?

I didn't realize the A1020 could be used to transfer C64 files. Maybe I
should raise the price! P^) I haven't used it for more than a year so I
thought would sell it before everyone loses interest in it. I never had any
problem with it.

Remember that it only works if you can get Disk-2-Disk from Central Coast
Software. I really don't know if they are still producing that one, but it
works beautifully.

Well, I suppose you COULD set it up to run your hose with one of those X-10
(or whatever the number) systems you can get from Radio Shack. I haven't
done that with mine, of course.

Ha! How did you know that I do that? Atually I don't run my "hose" with it,
but it does program the X-10 controller that runs a few lights around the
place. I don't fire it (the C64) up very often but that is one reason I
still have it.

I once saw a table lamp with a shade made of circuit boards from the
Commodore 1541 drives. It was kinda cute, too.

If you are really wanting to get rid of your old 2090A try this with
your local dealer: I had one (2090A) that went bad one me, I took it to my
dealer for repairs and he basicly told me it would cost more to repair it
than to buy a new controller, so despondant about the situation he told me
that C= offers trade ins for their old equipment on purchases of new
equipment. To make a long story short he (my dealer) actually gave me
$150.00 credit on my old broken 2090A!!! Toward a new controller (actually
he shifted some paperwork and got me the GVP 030 Combo board for less than
$600). Boy was I a happy camper! I don't know the details of the
arrangement with C= b it might be worh checking out.

IF your dealer did what it sounds like he/she did…they cheated
Commodore by submitting phony paperwork. If a dealer will cheat their
supplier…they'll also cheat the customer…and I wouldn't deal with them.
Again…that's ONLY if they did what your message implies they did.

What you say may be true re the shifting of paperwork that my dealer did
for me, but I believe what had happened was this: another customer had
ordered a 2091 from them (they have very little Amiga stock). And they
just stuck my 2090A in with the order. I wasn't even considering the 2091
(IVS Trumpcard actually was what I was thinking of getting to replace it
with) but with the trade-in they offered me I could afford the GVP 030 w/
controller. What they did may have not been technicly correct `but' I
would have ended up thowing the 2090 in the trash otherwise.

It was more than technically incorrect…it was flat wrong. The
other customer didn't deserve a trade-in value…he/she had nothing to
trade in. you didn't deserve a discount…you weren't buying another
Commodore product. But your dealer played games with Commodore…and made
it look like you bought the 2091 or that the other customer traded in the
2090. Neither of which occurred.
Now, if you had sold the 2090 to the other customer, for it's trade
in value and the other customer had traded it in…then all would have been
quite legal and above board. But that's not what occurred.
I realize your dealer did this…not you or the other customer.
But the point is that your dealer cheated. The end result is that
Commodore's intent…to get current customers to upgrade their Commodore
equipment for newer Commodore equipment at a discount. In other words, to
encourage Commodore sales.
What ended up occuring is that Commodore paid you to buy someone
else's equipment.

A $150 trade-in sounds great but I don't really need a new controller. I
have a controller and accellerator for my 2000 and my 3000 doesn't really
need one. I didn't know C= had a trade-in deal. Maybe others could use this
info. Thanks anyway.

why is everybody giving you such a hard time about the 2090a? I'm not
really up to speed on ami hardware, but won't it get the job done? is it
thaaaat sloooow? will it support amax? I could be interested.

The 2090a is a little quirky but it is not really slow, it works with both
ST506 and SCSI drives and I think it works with Amax (you might check with
Readysoft to be sure). It doesn't support the rigid disk block standard but
that is not such a big deal in my mind. It does autoboot. I used it for 3+
years with no problems. I don't mind the snide comments: it just comes with
the territory here. Sometimes you take it; some times you deal it.

The 2090 or 2090a are definitely supportted by A-MAX. I used a 2090a with
A-MAxII.
