#Corel Design Contest

Admittedly, Corel's ad campaign is a bit . . . uhm . . . garish(?). But as
far as I'm concerned, it's fine compared to Harvard/windows. "look, you can
draw really ugly nonsense faster with harvy than corel!" (actually, I did a
close duplicate of it, just to see what they were talking about, in little
more than an hour, with CD). I think the only realy problem with the recent
adds is trying to show too many samples of different things it can do,
(effects, etc) in one space. It gets to look like a color version of the
average mac user's frst DTP attempts (how many fonts and shadow boxes can I
cram onto each page)
And maybe they should stress making money with it instead of putting so
much emphasis on fun. Making money is fun.

I also got the "upgrade" from SPC (Harvard Draw), and I have to agree that
the claims they make in their ads are far from truth. Thay even will not
say that Harvard Draw will not even let you do color separation (neither
does Publish Magazine who has such a high regard for that program), not
even mentioning the "higher" functions like overprinting the outline to
create chokes and spreads. (Too bad Corel did not improve those in Draw
3.0!)
And one more observation: Low quality public image Corel creates with their
(garish?) ads does not help the users of Corel either. How come you are
billing me so much for your work if it is done on this (garish?) program? –
not so well informed client might say to a designer… So, how about it,
Corel? Will you help us, by helping yourself?
If ain't broke – don't fix it? Well maybe it is time to take a harder look
at it…
Actually, I've never had a client say I charged them too much based on the
ads. (Maybe I'm not charging enough<G>) Then again, most of my clients are
not particularly computer literate.
Much of my work gets sent out as AI files, and an art director called me
last week asking me to do some work that they'd been doing in-house with AI
on their macs, and haven't been as happy with as the stuff I send 'em. Now
they're chomping at the bit for a mac version of Corel.
