MNP and CIS problems

Hi,
This is a general question regarding optimizing my current logon and Whap!
sessions. What I've found, despite rumors to the contrary, that I am not
able to have Whap! communicate with CIS at 2400 baud, and have my modem
communicate with my Amiga at 9600 baud.
Since I use MNP 5 (maybe I should be using MNP 4???), from what I've
learned on here that increasing the link speed modem->computer should
realize some improvement in throughput times. What I've found, however, is
that I get a string of xxx~ xx xxx or something like that once I log on
to the system. The one thing I've not heard commented on is the correct
protocol to use from the serial port and in the software.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be using CTS/RTS, XON/XOFF, or
NONE as the handshaking method, or is what I'm trying to do not possible???

Tim,
Since most of the downloading from CIS is the downloading of archived files
which are already compressed, further compression under MNP would just make
the files *bigger*, so CIS only uses MNP 4. You should be using CTS/RTS, I
think. At least, that is what I am using and it works.

Tim,
It is very important that you use CTS/RTS handshaking (aka, hardware
handshaking) when talking to a "new-fangled" modem at a different speed
than the connect speed. Without this enabled, you will have problems.

Thanks for the information. I checked my preferences, and had XON/XOFF
selected as the handshaking protocol (which makes perfect sense only
because I have no bloody idea what that means in the first place). I'll
take Betty's suggestion and set up the modem to use MNP 4 with CTS/RTS
handshaking. I'll set the terminal defaults to 9600 baud, and the modem to
"autosense" the baud rate (which I think it's capable of doing).
If you have any more great suggestions, just throw 'em my way!
