How can a Nec Silentwriter Postscript printer connected to the parallel
port be made to print using Amax 2 (the cart and not the newest software)?
Is there a printer driver or what does one do?

No you must hook it up via Apple Talk which is supported only by AMAX II+
the card and software in order to use a Laser Printer.
Aargh. Yet a friend tells me he prints to his deskjet from the regular
Amax cart. Why is that? Software or hardware problem?
From my understanding a deskjet works much like a Dot Matrix type printer.
it prints as the print head moves along the paper. Were as a laser must
form the page in memory before it can print. Amax software did not provide
for laser support. Although Amax II+ software does not support Laser
suppot also the hardware has Apple Talk which supports the NEC Laser. This
will allow you to print to the Laser's Through Apple's System.
I see. Next question: is it possible to get software to print a postscript
file to disk without having Apple Talk? Does the software somehow rely on
that or could we get any files to disk and then print them from the Amiga
itself? Is there a mac equivalent of the CMD program that Amigans use?

Well from my understanding there are some programs that will print EPS
files out mostly in the Desk-Top Publishing software. You just need to
transfer the Mac file into an Amiga file, then load it into a program that
will print EPS files, as EPS files are a standard (I think) you should have
no problem.

From the MAC or from AMAX, you just press "Command"+K or "Command"+F to
print to a postscript file on disk (usually in the directory on the MAC
where the program you're printing from is located). on the Amiga keyboard
"Command" (the cloverleaf key) is Left Amiga (maybe right-amiga as
well???). If you use the K key, the Laserprep prolog is prepended to the
file, and if you use the F key it isn't. Try those options from the Print
dialog box and see if it works. (I'm pretty sure the correct keys are K
and F, but if they don't work I'll double check for you–it's in some
documentation I've got lying around here somewhere…)

instruction about key-command printing to PostScript files on disk.

You're welcome:) BTW, if the key commands don't work, let me know; i
penned them from memory and the bona-fide key sequences are in some
reference book around here. I'll gladly correct any misinformation. The
catch to the printing to disk is that the MAC OS will print a file called
Postscript0 (or PostscriptN where N is an integer) "somewhere" on your hard
disk. It's usually in the same folder as the application, but you
occasionally have to look around a bit for it.
Printing is best using a "real" postscript printer–Post only takes it if
you muck around with the Laserprep file a bit; PixelScript has a seizure
with it, and I don't know about SaxonScript.

Fortunately for me I have a lovely NewGen TurboPS here for PostScript
output…
