Kevin, I noticed your question abut removing write from your Windows
setupIf you use Nautilus a lot you may get a lot of errors when it goes to
look for write and does not find it. I removed Notepad some time ago and I
still have some applications that look for it for readme files etc. Winword
can be used to open those files but it must convert them first which takes
a little extra time. It may not be worth removing unless your real tight on
free space. Also I noticed you said you had ver 2.0a of word, If you call
M/S they will send you 2.0c for free. I just received 2.0c and noticed that
documents seem to import from WP5.1 with a little more of the formating
intact and I no longer have problems importing and displaying Tiff files.

Thanks for the info Brian. The version I have of Word is the Multimedia
edition. Do they have the version 2.0c in that. Please tell me so I can
order it before I go. But I don't understand why they would send me an old
version when I just ordered it last month.

The CD ROM versions of Word are all version 2.0a.

Is it possible to put a newer version of Word over 2.0a without it messing
up the multimedia parts?

I don't have the multimedia version myself so I couldn't say, but it's
likely you could compare the multimedia drivers/dlls with the ones on the
later version and do a kind of manual re-link, I'd think. Might take work,
though.
Or you can wait until their next press run and then holler for a 2.0c
or later!

I'll call MS for the update. My days of experiment with manual
manipulations is not a pleasant one. I hate having to reinstall Windows
over again to get it working right. Lately MS has done a better job of
doing this than I can.

Oh, yeah, MicroSoft can do it better, but I've seen no signs that
anything but 2.0a is showing up on CDR, and I'm not sure that c from disk
won't do some of that overwriting. It may not. That's really a question to
ask MicroSoft.
I kind of thought they were but I wasn't sure. Thats why I thought I'd
ask.

Your level of computer/multimedia expertise is astounding . . . but how
the _heck_ do you know that all the CDROM Words are 2.0a? Reading PC WEEK?

Official statement from MicroSoft. 2.0a was the only version when they
sent the CD ROMs off for mastering. When those sell out, the next pressing
will have whatever updated Word is then out.
Kevin, I think I missled you, Winword 2.0c is available on floppies. I
originaly bought it on floppies and they sent the upgrade free. I don't see
why they wouldn't send it to you on floppies though. Try calling M/S
(800-946-9400) and ask for the upgrade, If they don't want to send it free
try complaining about importing Tiff files or something similar. I don't
know about anyone else but I have never had any real problem with M/S
customer service. BTW don't install the help files from winword if you
don't need them they take up 2-3 meg of hard disk space!

I think the reason they didn't send me the upgrade is because I didn't
register the program. I'm bad like that sometimes, the card gets put on
the desk gets buried and lost. I had to send in the title page of the
manual to upgrade to MM Word. I think mine is 2.0a because it is the first
MM Word, the version of word on it is probably 2.0c. I can't see MS
putting an old version of word on a new product.
I am about to uninstall word and then reinstall. I'll check on the help
files, I hoping since it is a CD product help will stay on the disk. There
is no reason to have help load on the HD when you have it on CD.

Shame on you! ALWAYS register the program–particularly MicroSoft
programs, since they really are good at upgrading, even incrementally.

Must admit I don't get a lot of unsolicited mail here. I used to get
swamped when I lived in England.
Practically every letter _I_ post costs a different amount. Not only are
there a multitude of weight bands, but there are even different rates
according to the physical dimensions of the envelope, and that's just
_within_ Germany<g>
