#Paddy Hannon = Mystery?
26 messages in this thread
Hi…
A short while ago, someone named Paddy Hannon was hawking his Amiga stuff
in this section…did anyone buy anything from him? I am very curious
about this because Paddy seems to have vanished. No responses from
E-Mail…our deal was never finalized….(s)he is not listed under
DIRECTORY, nor is there a "Paddy Hannon" to be found under PHONE*FILE…all
I know is that Paddy was located in Maui…
If anyone has had any dealings with the mysterious Paddy (or if
you're out there Paddy!), please respond either here or via E-mail. I'd
really like to find out if Paddy's deals were for real, or if we had some
sort of scam going on on Compuserve…
Jonathan
See my email…
Jonathan,
I too would like to find out wha happened to Paddy, I have posted
several Email messages (requesting a reciept) and have not heard one word
and (s)he has not picked up my email. If you hear anything, please let me
know.

Steve,
Hmm…this is getting pretty interesting. May I ask what you were trying
to buy from Paddy? Did you actually get something, or was your deal
stranded as well? All indications are that Paddy was not entirely above
board…which is a shame, since I had grown to trust deals made on
CompuServe. Perhaps one of the Sysops could find out if Paddy Hannon is
still an active account?

I made an offer to Paddy for a few things He or she accepted I then
countered with an offer for a larger package and the last reply I received
was that he or she had been made an offer for the entire package and was
waiting to see if the deal would go through…I have sent lots of email
since and no response. Has anyone ever dealt with Bob Prins? I will post a
story about him to ward any off any similar encounters. Will Post it next
week. Bob ended up being a real horror story to deal with. DA
Don,
I had the same situation…Paddy told me that he was offered a package
deal, and (s)he was going to suspend our deal depending on the outcome.
Can't say I've ever even heard of Bob Prins, but I would be interested in
hearing about your experiences.

Jonathon,
"Perhaps one of the sysops could …" — no, we can't. CompuServe keeps
subscriber info very confidential — you wouldn't want it any other way,
would you?

Steve…
I don't want to know anything about Paddy; of course it would be unethical
to get such information such as his/her phone# or address…but I'm not
sure I see the problem with know whether he/she actually exists on the
network.

Jonathan,
Obviously, he/she exists….he/she left a message here, and there's
no way you can "fake" a ppn. You can change your name…but nothing you do
will give you a new ppn.
Don
Don,
I think that the question is…does Paddy still exist here on CIS? Was
Paddy simply using a temp account to make a quick buck? A lot of folks
have sent E-mail to Paddy, with no results. It would probably put a lot to
rest if they knew that Paddy was no longer around to get it.
Jonathan
Jonathan,
Leave a message to feedback…they may be willing to check to see
if he is still active under the ppn you have. Then again…they may not be
willing.
Don
Its amazing that this guy has rights to his privacy when he has violated o
ours. DA
How has he violated your privacy?

Don,
Why???
Did anyone send money for something they didn't receive? Have you
every heard of, "Let the buyer beware"? Have you read the rules on buying
or selling via the classified ads here?
Don
Jonathan,
Hmmmmm…..No I have not done anyting other than exchange a message or
two here in the public forums BUT I have held off (and probably lost) on
another deal for a hard drive…..I was interested in the 105 SCSI LPS
quantem drive that was listed. What causes you to think the deal was not
above board? (answer with email if you do not wish to say publicly). I too
have grown to trust the deals advertised here, all that I have made here
have left me extremely satisfied.

Steve,
I can't really get into details…but this is what leads me to believe that
something was rotten here…
* Paddy shows up from nowhere. I would have recalled that name from
previous messages…didn't ring any bells to me. Can anyone claim to have
ever had any discourse with Paddy before?
* Paddy stalls me on two deals that were "closed"…
* Paddy disappears. No one I am aware of has been able to reach him via
E-mail.
* I find someone who actually did close a deal with him here; seems that
Paddy misrepresented the deal that they made…the buyer felt a bit abused.
* I find out that Paddy might have been an Amiga dealer…which puts a
somewhat different spin on things. This is unconfirmed.
I hope that this does not happen again.
Jonathan
Johnathan,
Paddy was fairly active in Arts and User for a period of about 9 mos.
ending about a year ago. I had added him to my Book file, so I presume I
sent him at least one message. If he was selling a bunch of computer
equipment, he might not have access to CIS anymore.
The last time I checked (Sept. 90) there were no authorized Amiga dealers
on Maui.
-Homer
Homer,
Thanks for the info. Guess Paddy must have hit a big sale, and neglected
to tell any of the folks that he left hanging. I hope that any other
dealing with him were legit…

I left an offer via mail and he called me voice at work and was interested
in selling to me. By the time I got off my duff and called him back… he
sold the entire set. He expresses his apologies for not saying so, but
everything was sold at once….
He was in Hawaii….
-Jonathan
Jonathan,
Ah well…so it goes. And so ends the Paddy Hannon mystery…
Thanks for the info.

Sounds like a job for McGarret and Five-0! I also attempted to track this
person via Amiga buddies who live on the big island as well as the
information operator. Nobody ever heard of that person, but that's not too
difficult to understand since dere's a lotta bodies on de island brudda! We
could turn this into a sort of adventure game "Where in the world is Paddy
Hannon?" The likely explanation is someone with a temporary sign up kit who
likes to pull chains, less likely that they are trying to rip off since the
posts didn't seem to request cash up front, or perhaps an unfortunate
accident. Hope you work out your issues with this person, not dealing in
good faith on CIS is bad Karma for the forum. I have had mostly good
dealings with forum folks and have recommended that others look to this
forum when buying or selling used gear because of the good experiences I
have had.
Regards
Frank
Frank,
I hope that you have had good experiences with buying merchandise here…I
believe you bought an 8 meg card I put up for sale a while ago! I have
sold that and ram chips, and it appeared that the buyers were very
satisfied. I have also bought an accelerator from someone on CIS, and it
has been working flawlessly ever since. Its a shame to see bad deals
happen here.

I just bought an A3000 over the forum, and have been very satisfied… the
person selling it was very responsible and extremely helpful, going so far
as overnighting the machine.
I've also bought tons of stuff from folks here in AmigUser, as well as
from other forums, including the main CIS CLASSIFIEDS and the DTP Forums
classifieds section where I was able to get a NEW IN THE BOX Epson ES300C
for a great price. Haven't been burned yet. I've also sold lots of stuff
here.
Of course, I feel most comfortable when I recognize the name of the person
as someone who frequents the forum on a somewhat regular basis.

Robert,
Sounds like my experiences here. That's why this Paddy thing is so
irritating! CIS usually works really well in this department.
Jonathan
I had bought an XT bridgeboard from one of our CIS buddies. He then saw
postings from me on how to fix this and that. He somehow got my phone
number and called me at home and set me up for clear sailing. Hell of an
effort and a super nice guy! And it was his dime!
