Anybody out there with any information/opinion on the NEX CDR-36 CDROM
drive?
Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

You can download the file CDROMF.ZIP it contains a comparision chart of
many different drives. The NEC-36 is a SCSI device and access speed is
slow 450-550ms, its portable.
What particular attributes are you looking for in a CD-ROM drive?
You might want to download CDFAQ.TXT as well. Both of these files give
good background material on CD-ROM technology.

particular drive, cause I'm about to buy one!

I would strongly consider a NEC-37 at least since it is MPC compatible and
its faster. If you are just looking for external units if you want Photo
CD capability and multi-session I think Texel and Toshiba are the only ones
who have anything currently shipping.

I'm looking to add an external CD player onto one of my systems. I'd like
it to be pretty good but I'm not prepared to pay out the cash for the
_best_. It's been suggested I look at an NEC 74 at Sam's Wholesale club
($375? and includes sound card of some sort).
Any suggestions? I want one that will be multi session compatable,
multimedia, and perhaps photo. External SCSI is a strong preference.

I don't know what the prices are on the Texel drives but those seem to be
closer to what you want than the others. It scsi, multi-session (with a
$20 chip upgrade), and Photo CD compatible. And judging from other
people's comments in this forum. Many are impressed with it.
