#New CDROM purchase

Hello. I just joined this forum because I am interested in buying,
appropriately enough, a CD-ROM drive for a 486SX system. I was wondering what
advice anyone might have, in terms of where to look, what reliable brands are,
etc.
From my own limited research, I've come to a nebulous set of guidelines,
looking for something with an access time under 400ms, preferably under 300ms,
in the $300-$500 range. Is this realistic? ANd where can I find such a thing?

Lee…Welcome! I can certainly recommend the system I am using on my 486DX
now. The Texel 5024 external (the 3024 is internal) has an access time under
300mS and transfer speed of 300KB/sec, just about the fastest around. It is a
SCSI unit and can be had for under $600 including interface. Knock $100 off if
you already have the SCSI interface. I use mine with a Trantor T128 (now the
T130) SCSI card. Hope this helps. Yell if you want more info.

I just installed the Toshiba 3401B and Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum
16 Sound Card. I use the PAS 16 as the SCSI interface and the drive
and sound card seem to work very well together. I purchased this
combo from ASA Computers in Santa Clara, CA for under $600.00. You
will need an audio cable from Media Vision if you want to listen to
CD audio.
