The Wall Street Journal (6/1) mentions an intriguing product that I'd like to hear more about. Has anyone here seen it? What exactly does it contain? Complete works or snippets? Does it require Windoz? One trailblazing effort with CD-ROM is a multimedia disk called Perseus, from Yale University Press. Dozens of colleges use it to teach Greek and ancient civilizations. On a single computer disk, it has 25 volumes of Greek text (with English translation), a 35,000 word Greek dictionary and 6,000 photos and drawings of artifacts and arahaeological sites. Perseus costs $120, much less than what comparable books would cost.

I remember Perseus when he was just peeling potatoes on KP… well, that's another story. According to my handy-dandy 1993 CDROM Directory (pub by TFPL), Perseus is a joint project of the Packard Humanities Institute, Xerox and other universities. It contains some 6000 illustrations and a host of works in original Greek and translation. Its listed price is $150, and it runs on a Mac. Yale Press is at 203/432-0912, 203/432-2394 fax.

Perseus does run on the Mac, but also on CD-ROM and videodisc player. An early and very forward-looking application, and a cult classic for the humanities. I believe this is an excellent resource for the classicists, but appears to require a substantial stand-alone workstation. Not over-priced, either — hardly a commercial title even if it is sort of commercially marketed. There are a few articles/reviews in the literature describing this application.

Paul: >>Perseus does run on the Mac, but also on CD-ROM and videodisc player.<< What does this mean, exactly? Best – Rich
