(I've read several of the other replies already, but I wanted to make sure to
reply directly to you).
You can contact Apple directly, and for about 5K get a Sony or a Phillips unit
(both are capable of writing 63 (~550MB) and 74 (~650) minute discs). Sony
charges about 2K for their software for the Mac, dunno about Phillips (which I
do know is supported by Topix). Both units are 2x speed.
Funny thing is, I don't do Mac. I use a Sony on a PC system (under DOS, not
Windows, BTW). Since the drive is a SCSI device, you can plug a Mac formatted
volume into the chain, and tell the premastering software to get the data (and
how much, say "100MB" or "650MB") from the attached Macintosh volume, and away
it goes. I doubt it works the other way (Macs writing PC CD-ROMs). You might
want to consider that when looking into a drive if you ever intend on doing
other platforms.

On the Mac it's just as easy. For PC CD-ROM's, I use TOPiX and use
it to format the CD on my Sony. Just to insure that the CD works, I then run
SoftPC and verify the CD from DOS and/or Windows… Not too bad for a Mac…

I am surprised that you can get the CDW-900E for 5K from anyone. I might buy
another at that price.
BTW, a bug the Mac software from Sony and also in the TOPiX package
causes horrible things to happen to you (eg crash) if you have more than 10
volumes online.
