Thanks for your useful input. As I've mentioned to Rick it is of
prime importance to my employers that each article must appear in
exactly the same way as the article that appeared in the original
book/journal. That is the reason for their publishing in book form
direct from photocopies.
Platform- I think that will have to be DOS. Most books that we sell
are bought by libraries who have DOS based computers with CD-ROM
drives. I will still check out Microsoft Viewer though. I didn't kow
about fee plus royalty arrangements for these packages. I will pass
on this info to my employers. Thanks

One other item that may be of assistance… A new program called CommonGround
has been released which can give you the best of both worlds. It indexes text
but stores the document exactly as it
entered. I use it to permit me to send electronic flyers without
worrying about the end-user having the correct fonts etc.
Its documents are platform independent and has a special viewer
version that makes the document completely self-contained.
Although currently on the Mac, I spoke with the developer and she
said that the PC version is in beta. The company is No Hands SW at

One more bug (or two). You may have already heard about the new compression
driver that allows more data to be written to a CD-ROM. It allows 1.3 GB or
more of data on a CD.
The second bug, you mentioned staying with a DOS platform. Since you're
talking about using image files, why not make it an ISO 9660 platform so it
doesn't matter what kind of equipment is on the other end?
