#Midi interface problems

I have an ECE midi interface in an Amiga 3000. Problem: The thing doesn't
seem to work. Use a midi sequencer to send a midi file to my synth modules, no
sound at all. Use a midi synth to send signals simply thru the midi thru on
the ECE. No dice. The serial/midi switch is in the right position. The midi
interface works fine on an Amiga 2000 that I have. Anyone have any ideas?
Does the A3000 require some special software library to work? Wouldn't the midi
thru work no matter what?

ECE makes an A500 and an A2000 version of its MIDI interface. I'm not
certain, but I don't think the A2000 interface is supposed to work with
the A3000. It only works with the A2000.

Dom, Thanks very much for your reply. I was afraid that was true, but the
woman at Briwall reassured me that it would work. I will have to call ECE, I
guess, to find out the real scoop.

Is the 3000's serial port working with other peripherals (Modem)? Is the
machine switched ON? (Even for MIDI Thru the interface needs a bit of
"juice" to run…) – Wait a minute – you said the interface was _in_ the
computer? Plug-in card? Then it might be it needs to be activated by some
sort of program… (MIDI sequencer etc.)

I guess I must have trashed my serial port, though I do not know how. Those 12
volt pins (numbers 9 and 10) must have gotten shorted out. I have not measured
the voltage yet, but that does seem to be the source of my problem.
Bummer! Thanks for the suggestion. The midi interface, BTW, is a serial port
version.
Is that an internal MIDI card? If not, it's possible the interface is not
getting power from the 3000's serial port. There should be +12v on pin 9
and -12 on pin 10. The THRU is likely buffered, so it won't work if the
interface isn't working. It's not just a straight passthru.

If the + and – 12 volts are kaputt, what do I do? Is there some magic plug in
fix from Grapevine Group, or do I have to send it to a repair $hop?

I haven't got my schematics here at home, but I know there are pico
fuses in the later 2000's. I'm not sure about the 3000 without
looking at the prints. If those are blown, it's a matter of replacing
the blown ones. Since they would be soldered in, you'll have to
judge whether you want to tackle it. On some of the early 2000's
before the fuses were added, I have seen the actual pcb traces
vaporized. Yikes.
Thanks, Jim. If you figure out the location of those fuses, I would appreciate
a buzz from you. I have the schematics in the back of the 3000 manual but that
is one tough read for non-rocket-scientists. <g> I guess if I can replace a the
clock battery on a 386 motherboard, I can probably tackle a pico fuse. I'll
just hire drawfs to do the detail work.
Mike, I looked at my prints down at the store. According to them,
there's only a fuse on the +12v. It's F300. The board layout picture
shows it right next to the serial port connector, on the side next to
the disk port. So, you'll have to pull the slots daughter board & the
power & disk bay out to get at it. That's assuming they didn't
change anything…
Jim, thanks. The whole machine is coming open this week for some
surgery — A Toaster 2.0 implant! So at that time, I will see what I
can do with that fuse. Thanks so much for your time and kind

Glad to help, Mike. I get lots of good info here on the Forums, so I
like to return the favor when I can. Toaster eh? I just installed
one of those in a customer's 3000 today. But we used the Toaster
Cozzy, cuz they were on sale.
