Questions about the use of 3DS should be posted to section 3. But, really, there's no special trick to it. You do need to have a driver for the video card that can handle that resolution, however. 3DS can only directly handle 320×200 to a VGA. ATI has VESA drivers you can use if nothing else. They can tell you more in section 3.

Phil, the machine is running in 1024 x 768 the resolution in 3dstudio is 320×200 in rendering mode. When I try the vesa driver with Rcpadi I get a error message "dinit: bad configuration file" I have erased the file and still have the same thing pop up after configuring. I have changed the set statements in autoexec.bat and 3ds.set to complie with the proper driver and still get the same error. I know this thing can rendor in 640×480, but it does not work for me. I know theres probably nothing to it, but I can't seem to get it to work properly. JOHN

We had an ATI Card in the shop for a while, but most cards drivers for Autocad and 3DS are made by PANACEA or VIBRANT, The manual should give you exact steps on how to set it up. Upload your config.sys and Autoexec.bat files so we can take a look and that will probably solve your problem. If I understand your message correctly, you say you are trying to use a vesa driver wint Rcpadi. That should not be neccesary. The only vesa driver I am familiar with for 3DS (I am no expert here) is the rcpvesa driver that comes with 3DS. Otherwise, use the autocad/3DS driver that came with your board. When you install them they usually create a batch file where ever you installed them that have the proper SET statements in them. I just copy these into my Autoexec.bat to set every time I boot. It sounds like you are missing the obvious, and if it is any consolation, I have been there many times. Just last week I was attempting to plot somthing out on one of our big plotters and I had the wrong cable hooked up to it, and it was driving me crazy trying to figure out why it wasn't working. I finally got a fellow employee over to help me figure it out and he walks over to the plotter, looks down and switches cables. Of course there were three other people in the room at the time just to give me that extra stupid feeling. Of course they all had to rub it in without mercy.

Oooh I hate when that happens. Yes it was the obviuos and I ended up getting new drivers from ATI bulletin board. Everything is up and running now. Thanks for your help. John Hardy

Whenever you see "bad configuration file" in 3DS, you need to exit from Studio, delete the 3DADI.CFG file and start over. If the problem does not clear up after that, then you most likely have a buggy video driver. Contact the video card manufacturer and ask if there is a newer driver or if they know how to make it work with 3DS. Question: why are you running in 1024×768 mode? It generally doesn't gain one that much and slows down regens tremendously, making working from the main display much more painful than if one is working at the default 640×480 mode. Other people in section 3 can probably help you better than I.

Your right , it was buggy drivers. and we are running rendering now in 640×480. We were running normal with 1024×768 and not within 3d-studio. Thanks for the help. John Hardy
