Doug, you answer was right on the money and very informative, thanks. I had the pleasure to work with Sony Pictures on a couple of projects and I got to poke around their SGI department that does effects for the latest movies ("Last Action Hero") etc. They are trying to compete with and/or avoid farming stuff out to ILM and such houses. The equipment they have blew my mind and they even have the latest SGI machine (forget the model name), of which there are only a couple in the world. I can't talk about it too much since I'll probably wake up with my kneecaps missing but I'm sure you get the drift <g>. Martin

You're probably talking about the Indigo2 or the Extreme. I was viewing one of those to see what it could do. They let me keep it for about 1 month. It is an amazing machine, however, I can't justify the cost of the machine. But it's beautiful. Realtime phong shading….hmmm . I could get used to that! see ya later.. Alex.

Alex, I don't think it was the Indigo2 or the Extreme. It was something bigger than that and extremely expensive.

They probably were using SGI Crimsons with Elan graphics boards. (Big dark Red box that sits of the floor.) The Indigo is just a much smaller version without the upgrade space and processor power. One thing to watch, is that the base machine on SGIs is only the biggining. The real cost is in the graphics cards with on board processors and the other peadd ons that push the price way up. Nice machines though.
