.SIT File Extension?

I see a couple of files in the library with file extensions of .SIT. What kind of file extension is .SIT? and how do I read them? John

John, SIT is a Macintosh compression scheme. Like ARC or ZIP on the PC. ' Which platform are you using? There are UNSIT programs for both the Mac and PC, but most SIT files won't be worth much on the PC if they are Mac specific. JohnC

I'm on a PC. A second reply I got says that .SIT is MAC specific… Thanks for the info. John

John, it actually depends on what is in the SIT file. Text and graphics (TIF, EPS, etc.), some fonts, etc. can be used on both platforms, and there is an UNSIT.EXE available for that on the PC. JC

John: These are StuffIT files, compressed using a program by this name and requiring a copy of the program to decompress. (It's Mac specific, just as ZIP files are DOS specific.) I believe it is available in the Mac Applications Forums. Best – Rich
