#No VR for Amiga?
2 messages in this thread
I recently received a survey form and info on a "low-cost Virtual Reality"
program for PC's, that Sense 8 will be releasing soon. It is code named
the "Mercury Project". Sense 8 is also the maker of the "World Tool Kit".
A full blown "high-end" VR developing package.
I called to find out why the World Tool Kit and the Mercury Project were
not available on the Amiga platform. I was told that the World Tool Kit
was originally available on the Amiga but was discontinued because the
Amiga lacked the graphics power the application needed. He said that there
was no graphics board available for the Amiga that could give the
performance of the i860 board, which they support. He also went on to say
that the VGA cards that the Mercury Progect was supporting were more
powerful than any cards of such, on the Amiga…..
He says that the '040 processor just doesn't have the muscle that they get
on PC's… This was from Sense 8's "Amiga Expert".
Is this true? I though that the new DMI board was pretty powerfull? What's
going on? Is the '40 processor THAT lame? How much power are they talking
about!? Can someone please explain?

On AUTOPILOT over Chicago Stadium, GO BULLS!
Sounds like a wash job to me! I think the term "more powerfull"" that the sense
8 amigaexpert used should be taken as more available and having a greater
installed base. Now I am no processor expert but the '040 hums pretty good and
with the custom amiga chip set and AGA I find these statments hard to believe.
But I do believe that with the pentium chip PC's might just have enough power
to pull some decent VR off. Most major commerical VR games are done with
modifyed Amiga 3000's so I know the Amiga can handle anything needed.
