I didn't like the Dune-the Movie at all the first time I saw it. However, after repeated viewings (and some exposure to other David Lynch productions), I found it to be a fairly decent encapsulation of the story. (Though they did take _quite_ a few liberties with the storyline. :^) The attention to technological detail in an ancient galactic society was quite good, and on par with the original Star Wars movie. They used a number of subtle changes to help create distinct environments for all the different cultures. The laserdisc version is a nice transfer, and I like to skip past the Harkonnen stuff, as they're just a little too twisted for my tastes. (I think this is where they deviated the most from what _I_ had envisioned while reading the books.) And, on the subject of now-famous actors, who can forget Patrick (Jean-Luc Picard) Stewart as Gurney Halleck? Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom
