After reading your note about machine speeds I tried it on mine and the
results were like this:
Clone 486 DX 50 EISA with 16 meg of RAM : birdwalk.3ds : 15 min 51
QBICDEMO.3ds : 2 min 16
One thing though about the QBICDEMO, my VGA card (ATI Wonder XL does not
show 24 bits at 1024 x 768 only 256 colors) so how do you generate with 3DS the
still of 1024 x 768 x24bits ? I know the commands are in there, just cannot
seem to remember them, thanks for the Benchmarks though, it shows that the
upgrade to Pentium will help a lot..
render to the NULL device at 1024×768
You can input the values at the RENDER/CONFIGURE menu at the KF or the editor.
Put your display to NULL (also in that menu).

Hi Ana Francisca, the moment I saw your note I remembered what to do..I think
it was seeing the ASPECT RATIO that tricked me. I did the test for the
QBICDEMO.3ds it was 2:14 with null display but 2"16 if I gave it a display. As
for BIRDWALK.3DS it was 16" 09 sec with null display.. Obviously it is nice to
see that my times with a 486-50 EISA w/16meg RAM are faster than your Dell
486DX2/50 with 34:54 but the difference between your QBICDEMO at 2:19 and mine
at 1:16 is strange… When I see the time listed for your Dell P60 Pentium at
60Mhz of 36 sec and 8:15 sec I see a difference that is nice but can you
explain why the halving of time for the Birdwalk is more than halved for the
QBICDEMO mine: 2:14 yours 36sec ? Have you or any others who are dealing with
the Pentium chip heard about heat problems that have not been solved yet?

Both test are using a display: with the QBICDEMO we use a Matrox Impression
1024 and for BIRDWALK, 3ds use the VGA320x200 also in the same board. We also
tried the NULL display option in the BIRDWALK render BUT see no difference
between results (in the Compaq 5/60M). However, we notice a sightly difference
in the QBICDEMO results between the same render repeated two times (one
inmediatly after the other): one more second in the second render.
Regarding the last part of your message, I can't understand it very well.
What's your time for QBICDEMO? 1:16 or 2:24?
I think that PC makers and Intel have problems with the 66MHz version of the
chip. I say that because DELL and COMPAQ refuse to send us the 66MHz versions
of their respective machines. The same with HP. Any machine from IBM (they have
promised us that one will arrive soon). We didn't notice any heat problems with
the 60MHz versions of the chip (at last, after 48 hours of continuos running,
they didn't burn out 🙂 However, some people said that the tripled clocked
version of the 486 will outperform the Pentium at 60MHz and will be more
cheaper. We are also waiting for the EISA AXP from DEC, although we don't have
3ds for this platform 🙁

Ana,
I've been hearing little bits and pieces of this 486-99Mhz chip but nothing
concrete. Could you be so kind as to let us know what you have heard.

have been published in PC Actual in May. I also will include some of the info
