Any Emplant News?

It's gone awfully quiet on the Emplant front! They're now being heavily
promoted in the U.K. as being available and working, but I'm very doubtful
about this.
Any further news from you Emplant guys out there?

OK, I own an Emplant…I confess. 🙂
I have returned my Sybil for new one, and I have updated the system
software…and it turns out that I have bum System 6.0.5 disks. I friend
of mine had great difficulty with them with his Amax. Sooo…I am having
him make up some disks for me.
In other words…the jury is still out. Ask again in a few days, I will
have an answer.

From what I read on the FIDO feed on a local BBS, EMPLANT does indeed work.
Several folks have reported that. I think I even remember someone getting
some sort of color. One boots of his AMAX partition, etc. But whether it
works on all systems, etc. I do not know. We will have to wait for the
reviews, I guess.

I talked with Jim Drew last night, and this is what he had to say…
1. He thinks that my (second) Sybil is defective. It goes out today.
2. They are adding HD drive support within a few days, will allow using HD
CBM drive for HD Mac format, without the need for Sybil.
3. There is a public domain floppy adapter, which they are supporting.
4. They are also supporting using the Amax cart as a floppy adapter.
5. They are no longer going to actively support using Sybil as a direct
floppy I/O interface…they are going to suggest that users convert their
disks to Empant format, and run from there.
6. They are not going to sell any sort of floppy adapter themselves.
7. More Mac emulations are coming, that will be 32-bit clean (ci/si).

I have seen that expression before ("32-bit clean") butr never understood
exactly what it meant.

I honestly cannot say for sure, but I believe that 32-bit clean refers to
the fact that the newer machines use 32-bit code throughtout the machine,
and use 32-bit architectures (?). All I know is that a "32-bit clean"
implentation of the emulator will fix a lot of problems.

32 Bit clean means that the software is using all 32 bits as an address and
not taking advantage of 68000 address limitations where you could get away
with using a couple of the high bits for other 'stuff'. We had this
problem on the Amiga with one or two programs (a certain version of basic
seems to come to mind).
