Larry — I think the origin of this message is in the question of adding a 16-bit memory board to a 32-bit system, after having topped out it's 32-bit memory slots. Right? If so, I believe that while QEMM can sort memory by speed, it more has to do with refresh, because (and I'm sure I'll be corrected by someone if I'm wrong) adding a 16-bit board will add wait-states to the overall memory access, and there's nothing QEMM can do about that. The fact is that the 16-bit memory will take _a lot_ longer to access, and the CPU can't just selectively say, "Oh, that information is in the slow RAM, so I'll just sit on my hands for a couple cycles" or "that info is in the fast RAM, so I'll just take it and run." It will just treat it all the same. Dave

It's important to point out that memory expansion boards in the ISA bus will only address 16M. If you already have 16M on the motherboard, that won't help. The only way that memory (expansion) can be used is as EMS memory (in which case there is no speed difference problem). Larry, I looked at that all in one mother board I was talking about yesterday. It's a GKW motherboard (God Knows What) with an AMI bios. It has selective clock speed so the same board can be used for any type of 486 (SX/DX/DX2) from 25 to 33MHz. It has one of those big blue sockets and they claim it to be P24 compatible. It has 8 sockets for SIMM's and it will use 1,4,8 or 16M's (from 8 through 128Meg memory). It's got three ISA, three EISA and 2 VLB sockets. It's small (they call it "baby AT" format). And finally, it costs $199 with no CPU nor memory. They had a couple of those up and running all sorts of things. That's about what I could tell. I would say it's worth what you pay for if you feel confortable messing around with hardware. Gus

FWIW and Larry Minton: I once tried a 3 meg Everex card in a 386-40 MB with 4 meg of 32 bit ram for a total of 7 meg. I assigned 2 meg to the smartdrive also. What a turtle of a machine. It was 6 to 10 times faster (dos to windows3.1) with only the 4 meg of 32 bit ram than with the 7 meg. Even with lots more swap drive going on for windows. I decided to stick the 3 meg everex card into an old 286 machine to make it more attractive and I sold it.
