#Need help with JAPAN.LHA

Help!
I recently downloaded the file JAPAN.LHA from the User library and have
run into two messages which prevent me from accessing the program. What I
get is:
Unable to open your tool ':c/MuchMore'
Unable to open your tool ':c/XIcon'
Just in the last few days I (finally!) upgraded my 2000 from 1.3 to 2.1 —
so, the new OS is VERY new to me. Is there something that I have to do?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Those programs may not be in your c: directory, but there are others which
would work just as well. I suspect (though I have not looked at your
program) that you are starting it from an icon.
Click once on the icon, and then select "Information" from the Icon menu.
Look at the 'Tool Types.' I suspect you will find ':c/MuchMore' in one of
them, and ':c/Xicon' in another line.
You can change MuchMore to 'More' which comes with your system, and it
will work just as well. MuchMore is a freely distributable file reader,
and More is the reader that is built into your system. Should solve that
part of the problem.
Then, replace the "XIcon" with "IconX." They both do the same thing, but
IconX is part of your system software; XIcon is a freely distributable
program that was very popular before Commodore added IconX to the system.

Thanks so much for your quick reply.
I tried doing what you suggested "…change MuchMore to 'More' — but then
a requester (?) comes up saying that it cannot find ':c/More'. Can this
be because I have the program in my Work: partition of my HD and the C: is
in my System:? But — More isn't in C:, is it?
Replacing "XIcon" with "IconX" seemed to solve that problem. That one was
easy. Thanks!
On this same program, I come up with a requester asking me to install disk
#1 or CanDo, occassionally. Neither of which I have — whatever "disk #1"
is! Then, I get what I think is a "software error" message — the screen
goes black and I get a yellow (?) error message. (Since I'm still new to
2.1, I'm not sure what this is called. Anyway — it doesn't reset the
computer — but just goes back to the normal screen after I click the
mouse.)
Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with this program? Or,
is it possible that there is/was a download error?

On the problem with :c/More – erase the ':c/', leaving only 'More' and I
think that will work, too.
I downloaded and looked at your program. It seems that it is supposed to
work without CanDo, and that it CAN be run without the 13-disk Dictionary
it was intended to have with it, but when I ran it, it demanded disk #7.
I believe that if you read the docs carefully and follow them in your
setup, you will be able to use it, but without sound. The docs tell you
how to set it up.

Thanks for your help. I will try deleting the ':c/' part, leaivng only
'More'. Hopefully, it will work.
Docs? What docs? Hmmm, I will have to investigate this. Is that in the
"README.fnf" file? (That is what I have been trying to access (via icon)
and kept getting the requester about ':c/MuchMore'. Wish me luck.

From your message — I wonder now whether this program (JAPAN.LHA) is
worth it. In all events, I am learning more about getting around on 2.1
and on AutoPilot. That, in itself, is worth it. So far — I love 2.1 and
AutoPilot!

The file I downloaded from here had an icon that said "Read Me First" or
something like that. It was the one that called for MuchMore. I changed
the default tool to MORE, and then clicked on the icon. It brought up the
docs.

Alan,
You can use any text editor or word processor to read those docs, you
don't have to just the MORE command. I personally prefer a program called
View80 which you can find in Library 6 of Amigauser.
Its best to first be sure you DO have the command MORE before you try
using it. It does come with the Amiga OS disks. I believe it should be in
the Utilities directory. Check to see if utilities is in the PATH setup in
you startup-sequence or user-startup found in the S: directory.

Thanks for the advice on using a text editor or word processor to read the
docs. Duh……! Seems like the simpliest solutions are the hardest to
remember. It just gets frustrating when one knows that something should
work — but that one is doing something wrong.

Hi! I just tried the JAPAN.LHA program after erasing the ':c/' portion
and even found the docs that you mentioned!
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort (downloading the program to
help me! Wow! Thanks!) to solve the problem for me.
When I finally did upgrade to 2.1 there was that short period of time when
I was without CompuServe (until I figured out how to get Whap! working
again and then, finally getting AutoPilot). The first few days using 2.1
without the psychological support of your forums was a little scary. But
once I knew I could access the forums again — I sure felt better knowing
that you and the other sysops and forum members were there for support if
and when I needed it.

Alan,
To find the location of More (or any other command or program) try typing
in the Shell.
Please note this will only work with directories that have had their path
added with the PATH command.
Shell 3> which more ALL
AM-102:Utilities/More
Shell 3> which iconx
AM-102:C/IconX

You should get a directory utility. They are an immense help in seeing
what files are where. They're also good for transferring, deleting and
performing various operations on files. I use SID but there are a number
of PD and comercial directory utilities available.

Thanks for the advice regarding directory utilities. I "think" I have one
already (???) It's called DiskMaster. Is that what you are talking
about? What is SID? I have never heard of it before. (Sorry, I am a
little computer illiterate.) Is it better than DiskMaster? Something I
should look into???

I looked at it once , but I'm not too familiar with DiskMaster. If it
helps you see what's going on with your system storage and move things
around it'll help. SID is shareware so you can try it out before you pay.
The unregistered version is pretty good but the registered version is
better. Many people use DirectoryOpus, a commercial utility.
