#.AVI hangs
3 messages in this thread
I have a Gateway 4DX2-66V with a Sony CDU-41A CD-ROM reader. When I play .AVI
files from the CD-ROM drive through MPLAYER, after a varying amount of time
(ten seconds to a minute) the video stops, there is about a 15-second pause,
and I get the message "System Error: Unable to Read Drive D:" Sometimes
pressing "Retry" gets things going again. This happens about 80% of the time;
the rest of the time everything works. I have installed the new version 2.0
mach32 video drivers from ATI for my ATI GU Pro local bus with 2M; I have tried
caching my D: drive with Lightning for Windows; nothing has helped. If I
recall correctly, this did not happen under the old version 1.5 build 54 of the
mach32 drivers, but I did not play much video back then. I sure seems like a
memory problem to me; but I am using plain vanilla EMM386 and HIMEM configured
with MEMMAKER — nothing fancy. Any help would be appreciated. — Steve
I had a similar problem. I received a new ROM chip for the CD-ROM (A texel
3024) and everything was fine from then on…

Thanks for the suggestion. I am passing it along to Gateway tech support here
on CIS so we can try getting me a new ROM chip. I'll let you know how things
work out.
