Hi. I was wondering if anyone could offer some advice about a purchase… I
have been looking into purchasing a CDROM drive, and was interested with the
Texel 3024.
Would this be a mistake? And if not, is there any particular interface card
I need, or any which are preferable? Any software or hardware pitfalls I
should beware of? I have a 486SX system, if that matters. THanks.

We use (and sell) Texel here to corporate clients. They are, in my experience,
very dependable. Also, when they were converting from single to multi session,
we were able to perform the upgrades here; thereby circumventing having to send
them back and losing a couple of weeks in the process.
We're very happy with them.

Ditto on the endorsement of TEXEL. I use and have sold them with some of our
products. Performance is better than NEC multi- spin drives in spite of same
specs, and price is considerably lower. Performance may not be up to the new
Toshiba drives, but I haven't tested them yet. Specs for the Toshiba are
better, prices are higher too.

Hi Steve. Yes, agreed. On the Toshiba drives…they kind of lost my respect
when they came out early with "Photo CD compatible" drives with their
proprietary SCSI card (a $35 cheapy) and had the nerve to call it SCSI. It
would only work with their card and you couldn't add any other peripherals onto
the "SCSI" chain except for more cdrom…big deal.
Yup, Texel has my vote. 🙂
