If you had to choose either Toolbox or Microsoft's Viewer software to do MM
applications, do you have a preference?
Anyone else have one??

If you mean Toolbook or viewer, you really need both. Viewer is best for
titles that have a lot of text and especially if you require a text search
engine. Toolbook is good for most everything else. It has excellent MCI
integration.

If I were to purchase these two packages – Microsoft Viewer 2.0 and Toolbook,
it is my impression that I would be able to put together MM "solutions" at
least at some basic level for customers. This assumes that I just want to take
text, video clips, and audio clips that have been created elsewhere and make
them available in some method.
Let us suppose that I want to be able to edit video and audio — not so much to
modify but to combine/recombine clips. For example, take two sources of video
which are of five minutes length each and combine them into a single three
minute clip that takes pieces of each — but I don't need to change coloring or
composition. Same for the audio.
Can I do this with the above packages or do I need a third (or fourth package).
If a third (or fourth) is the answer, which would you recommend?

Neither Toolbook or Viewer 2.0 is a tool for editing video. For that, you will
need to use something like the announced but not yet shipped product Media
Merge from ATI. I believe that Media Merge had some kind of demo offer over in
the Multimedia forum, where you could get a few disks that demos the product
features. I have material on Media Merge in my book, PC VIdeo Madness, and
since that book is now out I guess I can tell you that the product contains a
storyboard editor for assembling clips and adding transitions, and a scene
editor for modifying clips with things like overlays and such. It's an easy to
use product, with a simple and functional interface. I like it quite a bit.
There will also be other editors, but I don't know what exactly has officially
been announced so far.
