Need a little help, please. I have three children (9,7,4) and want to get a
computer with a CD-Rom that is easy enough that at least the two oldest can
use. Also, would like to get Soundblaster Pro, Have heard great things about
the NEC CDR84. Should I buy them? Can I live with a 386/25? I'm looking at
an $800 savings over getting a 486/33. Appreciate your thoughts.
Several sources have packages with the NEC 84. I just bought one from
Computability in Milwaukee. It included the latest NEC 84 internal, compatible
with SCSI II and a Pro Audio Studio card. From what I am told, this is the
equivalent, and then some, of the SB Pro, and has the SCSI interface for the
NEC built in. The SB is limited to just a couple specific brands of CD Rom
drive.
I purchased a SB Pro a couple of months ago, before I had really done much
research on Drives and sound cards. Therefore, if you (or anyone else reading
this) is interested in a SB Pro card, I have a totally unused and unopened one
available.
Now if I would just quit writing messages and install it, I could give a
report. Unfortunately, the installation will probably have to wait until
Thursday. Lots to do the next couple days.
Thanks for your note. How about the 386 vs. 486 question for elementary school
kids? Any thoughts there? I'm not planning on writing a symphony or doing
back-up graphics work for DEEP SPACE NINE!
