#Pent-90 Lockup on render
4 messages in this thread
I have a Gateway Pentium 90 with 32MB RAM and MGA II card, DOS 6.21 and for
some reason, more or less at random when rendering a flic it locks up or
freezes whilst the rendering in progress line is active, not always on the same
frame. I have read my 3ds installation book for different settings of EMM386
and Himem.sys to attempt to deal with potential memory conficts and have also
tried to run it with Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files completely stripped of
almost everything, ie:
CONFIG.SYS=
COUNTRY=044,,C:\DOS\COUNTRY.SYS
STACKS=9,256
FILES=50
BUFFERS=50
[COMMON]
DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACHIGH.SYS
& AUTOEXEC.BAT=
@C:\STACKER\CHECK /WP
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $P$G
SET MOUSE=C:\MSMOUSE
C:\MSMOUSE\MOUSE
PATH C:\ALDUS;etc,etc
SET TEMP=C:\TEMP
…. But all this to no avail. The same meshes render fine on my 486,
can anyone help me with my frustration please??

What is 3ds' behaviour when you render to a sequence of individual
files? Will it render to the end? If so.. can you use video post to
composite these individual files in video post into a flic
successfully? We in product support have 0 586's…
Jonas, no, unfortunately it won't render to the end of a sequence of individual
files, having said that it doesn't always lock up, just more often than not. I
also had a problem (for the record) with smartdrv.exe, which caused the
"transforming objects" section of the rendering screens to take about 10 times
too long. Removing that from Autoexec.bat solved that problem. I know there
are others on this forum who have Gateway Pent-90's so I'm surprised it hasn't
come up before but meanwhile I'll try re-installing 3ds3.
Any other ideas gratefully appreciated!
Richard
Richard,
I have a Gateway 90 and have not had problems myself, but I would like to try
and duplicate yours. Please tell me how large and complicated is your
animation, what IPAS are you using, output resolution, ..etc. Also, how much
memory do you have? I have 40 Megs, a Targa+ and Diaquest 422 on board.
I have been having problems using my external modem over COM2 under Windows,
but I found out that this may be a known bug in the Intel PCI chip set.
