#Terminus won't go

I am really PO'ed.
Twice now I have downlaoded Terminus (it takes about 40 minutes at 2400
baud!) and taken the time to set up the necessary files and disk only to
have it not work. I very carefully read and followed the instructions for
the floppy disk install. The installation program reports a successful
installation. BUT…when I try to run Terminus, a message box appears
which says "Terminus evaluation release outdated. Please obtain a more
recent version."
I downloaded the Terminus archive in January but only recently decided to
give it a try. When that message appeared on the screen, I figured some
kind of timing routine figured out that it had been too long since I had
download the program–therefore, it was outdated. So, I went back to the
library and downloaded it again. After going through all the set up steps
again, I got the exact same message.
I tried both trms20.lha and txe20d.lha.
IF THE RELEASE IN THE LIBRARY IS OUTDATED, GET RID OF IT. [Yes, I am
shouting. I am really angry (as well as being frustrated) about this!]
If I am doing something wrong, HELP. I don't know what else to do. I
followed the instructions. Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Was this the very first time you've used Terminus, or have you installed
it before and tried it briefly? I just downloaded both archives, and
didn't receive that message. It appears that the message only appears
after the 30 day trial period. If you tried the program briefly when you
first downloaded it, the program might "know" when it was first installed,
and is now failing because the 30 days has passed.
I can only offer this as a possible explanation of what happened, because
the files were fine when I downloaded and tried them. I'm sure Jack will
be able to give you a better explanation of what might have happened.

I first downloaded the Terminus archive back in January, but I did not try
it out at that time (just couldn't take the time). When it wouldn't work,
I figured that I had gone beyond some time limit as you mentioned in your
message. Therefore, I downloaded it again, figuring I would start the
process all over again. For some reason (maybe I goofed somewhere), that
did not work because I still could not get it to run for me.
Needless to say I don't wish to download the archive a third time, but I
do want to try the program to see how easy it is to use (and all that kind
of stuff) before committing to paying for the registration.
I feel very strongly about paying for programs I use, and I plan to
register if I end up using Terminus. But I also like the idea of being
able to try a program first to see if it my fits my needs (actually, it is
more like seeing if the program is easy enough for someone simple like me
to use without too much trouble).
The suggestion Robert Griffith made to rest my system time worked out. I
will do that to check out Terminus. I don't mind the minor inconvenience
for a couple days just to check it out.

Your problem is that Terminus has a time limit for the demo use. The
Author of the program had planned to release a update to the program
before the time had run out. If you want to use Terminus set your System
date back a year and the program will work fine. A new version of Terminus
demo should be out any time.

Yes, I agree if you use a program you sould pay for it, but a demo version
is made to be used to see if you like the program. If I got the program
and it did not work I would not registor it.
I told Al how to solve his problem using the progam so that he could see
if he would like to pay the REGISTRATION FEE.

What actually annoyed me was that two weeks ago there was a whole thread
devoted to Terminus users discussing ways to get around the demo expiry. I
wasn't having a go at you :^).

I was the one trying to get round the demo expiry. The reason for this is
that I paid my registration fee of $45 well over two months ago and have
still not received the registered version. I need the date stamp on my
downloads so turning my system clock back is very inconvenient. After
waiting so long for the registered copy, I feel fully justified in trying
to find a way around the expiry date!

Circumstances fully mitigated, I think I would have done the same in that
case.
It really does tick me off though the lengths some people will go to avoid
shareware fees…. I wish Jack would set up the SWREG thing to make life
easier for folks.
If Steve A is listening it would be interesting to know if there was a
marked increase in registrations between Whap! and AP when AP was made
available via SWREG.

SWREG is a service provided by CIS for shareware authors. You GO SWREG,
select the program you want to register and the fee is debited to your CIS
account. Easy eh ?

In a post to me, Jack said he was going to SWReg v2.0e of Terminus. Just
that with the move that he just went through and problems with RIP
implementation in 2.0e it may take a little longer than he expected.

Your suggestion of resetting the system time did the trick. After
resetting the date back to when I downloaded Terminus the first time, I
was able to give it a try. Now I can see whether or not I want to use it
and pay for it. Thanks very much for your help.
