I've been out of the Amiga scene for a while, and it looks like I picked a hell
of a time to come back into it(liquidation?!) Anyway, can someone give me some
info on PC emulators and bridgeboards and what's available. Also, what is a
good price for the top of the line A4000 and what comes as standard equipment?

I can't help you with 4000 pricing, but I can point you to what I feel is
the best value in emulators… Utilities Unlimited offers the Emplant,
which currently ships with MAC emulation software… you provide the 256K
MAC ROMS and add system software (7.1 preferred). Soon, Emplant will also
have 486 emulation available… and both the MAC and PC emulation
multitask with AmigaDOS. UU has a support section in the AmigaVendor Forum
(GO AMIGAV) for more information.

it all depends what amiga you have and what you want to use it for. (nevermind
the preposition at the end)
if you just want to run simple dos programs on your amiga 2000 for example,
several companies are dumping their bridgeboards at absurdly low prices. if
you want to run windows, i suggest you go the standalone pc route, you will
thank me in the end.
if you decide to make your amiga run windows (because it would REALLY impress
your friends) you will hear my words haunting you forever… "he said just
buy a pc.. pc… pc…"

what are the advantages to buying a stand alone pc compared to finding a
bridgeboard or any type of emulator?

a standalone full blown 486 with svga, 420M drive, dual floppies, 4M ram, etc.
runs about a grand from places like top data and dee one systems. it will come
with its own case and power supply and expansion slots.
the amiga has but a few AT slots available and no room for any PC addons like
floppies and harddrives. i added a 1.2 M floppy to my amiga and used up the
only availabe drive bay. the expansion chassis alone costs about $500 (to give
you more slots), the bomac tower is $300 (to give you more space inside the
case. the janus software is extremely slow, so you'll have to add an ide drive
$300-$400 for any type of performance. and if you want to run windows you'll
need a cyrix 486 upgrade which is another $300. you'll need a vga monitor $300
which must be retrofitted by a flicker fixer which runs about $200. the all in
one ide/vga card is another $200. and of course the extra bb ram because the
bb won't run on an amiga with more than 6M of ram.
and then if the amiga breaks down, you lose your pc also.
i love my amigas dearly (a cult thing, i think) but i am typing you this note
on a standalone 486 cherried out and steroidal packed for far less than it took
to get my amiga to just run windows.
