C1962/1952 Monitors

I have an A2000 with a GVP G-Force 040 33 MHz accelerator board and the
original Video Toaster card running Toaster 3.1 software. I use this
machine to access CIS via AutoPilot. I would like to obtain a multi-synch
monitor that will allow me to get rid of the flicker that characterizes
the screens with Autopilot and other software using Interlaced screens.
My local Amiga dealer has just gotten in a Commodore 1962 and a Commodore
1952 monitor. Can anyone familiar with these monitors tell me the
difference between the 1962 and the 1952? Will either of these
multi-synch monitors work well with the Toaster in my A2000? Finally,
will either of these monitors solve the flicker problem with AutoPilot and
other interlaced programs? Are their other multi-synch monitors that you
would recommend as better than either of these monitors?

The 1962, and other multisyncs, will work with the Toaster if you get a
device called "The Sync Strainer." As for the 1952, I've never seen nor
heard of it.
In addition to a multisync monitor, you will need a display enhancer
(de-interlacer) of some sort. Simply plugging in a new monitor won't rid
you of flicker. Since you have a Toaster, you'll have to find a display
enhancer like ICD's "Flicker Free Video" that doesn't use the Amiga's
video slot.

Thanks very much for the info regarding the 1962. I had planned to
purchase the Sync Strainer when I purchase a multi-synch monitor although
my dealer indicated that the Synch Strainer would not be necessary for use
with my A2000 –only if I used the 1962 with the A4000 and Toaster 4000.

You, and your dealer, are correct – the Sync Strainer is only necessary when
the Amiga is genlocked. The Toaster is a good example of an ins application
that would benefit from a Sync Strainer.
For background information, the Amiga generally produces the vital H- and
V-sync signals that multi-sync monitor need to operate. However, when the
Amiga is genlocked, those same H- and V-sync signals are no longer produced.
Instead, those pins become inputs to the Amiga so that the Amiga can "follow
along" with what your NTSC video is doing. This leaves your multi-sync whining
away (literally) with no sync. The Sync Strainer takes the composite sync
signal (which drives the single-scan monitors nicely) and breaks it apart into
separate H- and V-sync signals.
The Sync Strainer does not, however, do any line doubling or scan doubling.
Your Sync Strainer-equipped multi-sync monitor will display interlaced video at
NTSC rates while genlocked. Otherwise, you'll get any other scan rate you
want, depending upon the monitor driver.
