The head was modelled with a G-Sphere set to 400. I tessalated it by a factor of 4 in the displacement PXP. Glenn 4Di.

Glenn – You never did say (publicly) whether you made the wrinkles with a bump map or not…. DT

Sory David, I thought I had answered that one. The wrinkles were definately Bump mapped onto the head. I did'nt want to get too heavy with the tessalation of it all. For fine stuff like that, a bump'll do. BTW, I loaded the head texture I painted for the displacement into DL5 so you can see exactly what I painted. Glenn 4Di.

PMJI Your head is great! (The one you modeled w/ Displace <g>). Everyone should download this one; starting to see the power of the new IPASes when creativity is applied.

You should see what a little DEFORM.PXP can do to create expressions! Glad you liked the head. Glenn 4Di.

Disk 6 and 7 really make 3DS a whole new program. A whole new technique for modeling. I expect to see a big change in the type of imagesand animations that have been created with 3DS up until now. I get a chill evertime I rotate a mesh in realtime with smooth shading and color. Kurt

kurt: are refering to the real time preview of ipas 3? how do you get colors?! ara
#105743From: Kurt McKeeverJun 4, 1994 10:53 AM
Did I say colors? I guess I meant color. You can hold the shift key and click render an select wire/flat/garroud as well as sliders for hilight color and shaded color. The feature of being able to spin a shaded/color mesh around any axis is worthy of an IPAS app alone. It would be nice if/when it rendered the bitmap on the mesh or at least a proxy image. (Of course you can increase the displacement strength temporarily see the bitmap displacement) Anyway, for me I can now "inspect" my mesh more interactively. Kurt

it is fantastic. i love it too. i just thought that there something there that i had missed. take care ara

>>It would be nice if/when it rendered the bitmap on the mesh or at least a proxy image. It can. Just hit the "draw pixels" button and a proxy of sorts will be drawn onto the wireframe or shaded image, but only onto the vertices, so it helps if you tesselate it first to make the proxy image clearer. If you don't need the extra faces, just uncheck the Tessalate button after you've viewed the proxy. David

Smooth shading and color in realtime? How? As far as the demos go it's flat shading and just gray. Just wondering. Dave Mennenoh

David, Try holding the shift key down while pressing the render button. – Rolf

Rolf, This is the first chance I've had an opportunity to thankyou for an excellent set of IPAS #7. Really nice work! Thanks, -JE

Hi Rolf, BTW I wanted to suggest an idea to you for displace as a future innovation. It would be nice to have the ability like in MEDIT to use two different images with slider values for creating a displacement map. In addition it would also be great to be able to use the object's assigned maps and relative mapping coordinates to physically displace the model so that the maps would line up accordingly. The idea would be to as an option "use object maps" "with coordinates". Also like in MEDIT have the ability to make the images negative. Thanks, its already one of my favorite tools. -JE

It causes the mapping coordinates you define in Displace to be applied to the mesh when you exit Displace. As far as the MEDIT features go, I guess we just ran out of room for more buttons and check boxes. I think the best thing to do is modify the image in a paint program were you have plenty of tools. – Rolf

Rolf, >> Have you tried using "apply coords" << Yes I have. What I was thinking was that I have a couple of stone monoliths which are already texture mapped with the coords already assigned. It took quite a bit of time to get things lined up, if I could just pull the maps from it and the coordinates then I could add a little more realism to the monoliths. I ended up using a different bump map because it would take too long to duplicate the relationship of the maps in MEDIT. Thanks, it was just a possible suggestion for the future. It really is an extraordinary tool! I'm just pushing hard on it, like everything. -JE

Thanks Rolf – works great, very cool in color & Gouraud. Great routines by the way, can't wait to be able to actually afford the real things. Dave Mennenoh

Im still waiting for my IPAS order to get here and all of this talk is getting to me. I can hardly stand it but I am glad other people are here to help with any questions I might have.
