#Starting to sink in

Hi Trent,
Well it worked! This working in shell is starting to sink in. After
decompressing the files successfully, I transferred them to a seperate drawer
and tried to start the program in WB with double clicking. After getting
'Program failed (error….etc)' feedback, it finally dawned on me to go back to
shell and execute it from there with the proper cd command. It worked and now
learning another way to interface with the amiga is giving me added confidence.
For your information, I am a new MacCIM user (4 days now) with an A4000/040
with Toaster installed, 2 meg chip ram, 18 meg ram, and 240 meg HD. While my
bread and butter is MAC desktop publishing, I want to expand into 3D and
multi-media work and feel that I should exploit the best of both platforms. I
also felt that subscribing to compuserve would help me with my steep learning
curve and you are proof that I made the right decision.
By the way, I am using DiskMaster for file management and am starting to feel
comfortable with it. You also talked about Autopilot for the Amiga. Do you
think I also hook up my Amiga to Compuserve as well in order to download files
created for their respective platforms? Would this double my subscription cost?
If not, what other hardware/software would be needed (besides another modem or
comm. card)? (Remember, at this point in time you're talking to a 8-year old
mind when it comes to hardware, configuration set-up procedures and the shell
envoirnment on the Amiga). Can you suggest any easy-to-understand books on
understanding and navigating AmigaDos and shell?
By the way, are you a sysop in this forum? I did't see any reference to it in
the message headers. If you're not, feel free to pass me on the one if I start
to get on your nerves with these novice questions.

No nothing wrong with this. It is helpful though in the future so that
when (or should I say if now <g>) a problem does arise common references
can be used (ie using commands that are specific to OS3.0 – which you are
running with – rather than earlier OS).
The neat thing about the Amiga and specifically the A4000 is the ability
it has through a third party board (the Emplant made by Utilities
Unlimited) that will enable you to emulate the MAC (and will run even
faster than the Quadra – I'm getting this second hand tho as I do not have
an Emplant – though I may just pick one up when they release thier 486
emulation – just so I can play those multitude of games that the IBM
has)..

Excellent program. I too used it a number of years ago, but switched
over to DirectoryOpus because there no longer is support for Diskmaster
(if it does what you need it to do though that is all you need). DOpus
has the added benefit of using ARexx scripts and does more than I need it
to do (even has some features that I have not really looked in to, but
when I need to do something new with it I find that it can do that as
well).

Sorry about that. Bad assumption on my part. I thought you were going
online through a term program and were writing your post while online. If
you are coming online with the MAC and are happy with that stick with it.
If sometime in the future you want to go online with the Amiga you could
use the same modem that you use for your MAC (if it is external – a comm
card from a MAC would not work on an Amiga I believe). It would not do
anything to your subscription as you would be logging on with your present
ID and name (as well as the same password). You would pay the same amount
of online charges that you would on the MAC.
I suggested the Autopilot as I hear (biased accounts of course <bg>) that
Autopilot is the best navigator for CIS (and it's only available for the
Amiga). This will in all likelyhood change in the future though when and
if IBMs get better in performance.

No, I'm not one of the lofty few (but I do have ambitions – you hear me

This is the third time you have made reference to this.<g> It is no
problem, and you will find all of the users in this forum to be most
helpful. I have been in to the MAC and IBM user forums (for friends who
do not have accounts) and I find that this forum is the most friendly and
helpful here on CIS. That's one of the reasons this forum and the users
are here – to help out those new users that make thier way here.
