I will very shortly be buying a Bridgeboard for the Amiga. I am currently trying to decide on the CBM 386 or the Elite Micro 486 SLC. I have used DOS machines quite heavily at work, where we do not typically run Windows. My question is, should I run Windows on my machine? I am not to concerned with having the Window GUI for running programs, as I quite like using PCTOOL's menus. What I wonder is, does the Windows interface within programs provide enough of an improvement in functionality, that I should get Windows and suffer the consequential demands it puts on a PC system?

If you get the CBM 386, then you shouldn't run Windows. The 386SX just doesn't have the guts to run Windows at a speed that is going to satisfy an Amiga user. The 486slc, while not a true 486, is still a considerable factor faster than the CBM gutless wonder. I am not a great fan of the Windows environment, but I will admit that it is a lot better than raw DOS. I don't know anything about PCTOOLS so I don't know if Windows is better. Please advise us in the forum if you get the 486SLC – I am contemplating a purchase of one and would love additional data from a real-world user before making such a large investment.

Michael, I would like to alert you that if you buy a 386SX board it can be upgraded to the 486 board. Also the price for upgrading is less if the 386 board is purchased from us. Dave Elite MicroComputers – via Whap!

Personally the only reason I have windows on my system is to run my scanner software which is windows only. I think you really have to try it to see if you like it. Personaly, I'm frustrated by it after using the Amiga's OS. And if you go to windows you really need to have about 4-5 megs before your run more then one task at a time. Dave: I agree… I find that I use Windows mostly to run apps that just aren't available under dos, like the scanner software and (most importantly to me) WinFax Pro 3.0 w/OCR.

Does it help to have an MMU to run Windows? Are there any boards for the Amiga that have an MMU? —–> Brian Simmons, Denver, Colorado. – via Whap!
