*** HISOFT BASIC 2 ***
I just ordered my upgrade to HiSoft Basic 2. Oregon Research is now
shipping it. The S/H charge is $5.00 for priority mail. I'll report how it
is after I receive it in a few days.

I own version 1.05 of HiSoft BASIC and use it extensively; I would very
much like to upgrade. However, the only BASIC I find listed in AC's Guide
which is from Oregon Research is called Power BASIC. Is this the same thing?
Also, has HiSoft BASIC 2 been advertised anywhere in the US? I will call
Oregon Research myself to find out further info (the number I have is (503)
620-4919) but I was just curious as to how you found out about this. I haven't
heard anything or read anything about HiSoft BASIC in years, except for a rumor
about version 2 being adver- tised in European Amiga magazines. Many thanks.

HiSoft has advertised version 2 in the British press. It was delayed for a very
long time. HiSoft posted a message on GEnie indicating that it was delayed due
to personnel changes. Oregon Research is indeed selling HiSoft Basic version 2,
and is its US distributor. They posted a message on GEnie indicating that it is
now shipping.
I believe Power Basic was a previous version.

HiSoft Basic 2 is the official upgrade to V1.05. It's not the same as
Power BASIC. Oregon Research left a message here some time ago stating
that they would be distributing the HiSoft products in America. They sent
me their catalogue, since I'm a registered user of V1.05. They listed all
their products for sale, including HiSoftS Basic 2, but it stated that it
wasn't yet available. I've kept in touch with them since that time. It was
supposed to be released months ago, but kept getting pushed back. It has
just been completed and is now shipping as of last week.
I have never seen it advertised anywhere, but it is available and is the
brand new version. It also includes the Basic extensions that used to be
sold by SunSmile Software. Among other things, it now directly supports
the use of sub-menus. I should be receiving my new version on Monday or
Tuesday. You can call and order by credit card, but you have to fax a copy
of your original disks to them. I left full information here a few days
ago. Call them and ask for Robb. You can tell him I sent you, if you'd
like.

Many thanks for the information about HiSoft BASIC 2. I am particu- larly
happy about the inclusion of the SunSmile Software extension and submenus. (I
have been adding submenus myself manually..allocating memory and defining new
structures..yuck.) I have called Oregon Research and have ordered HiSoft BASIC
2 (I suppose it was Robb I was talking to.) It really sounds like a great
package. Thanks for your posts; if I hadn't seen them I might have missed this
opportunity to upgrade.

Good. I'm glad you got the upgrade. So far the only thing I don't like is
that the large manual is in a regular paperback format. It makes it tough
to keep the manual open for reading while in front of the computer. I
would have preferred a spiral-bound manual that lays flat. Other than
that, everything is fine.

It's curious that some software manufacturers have not yet realized that the
spiral bound manuals are the best. I am a faculty member in a college physics
department and we are preparing new laboratory manuals- the college bookstore
suggested that the manuals be bound as paperback books. But the students need
both hands free when working with laboratory equipment, so we are making them
use a spiral binding. Some people just don't think, I guess. I will let you
know how I like the program when I receive it. Thanks again.

Yes, the manual is a real problem. It just won't stay open for reading,
as I try to enter the sample code. Also, the Tutorial section is a bit
advanced. I know BASIC, but this version supports direct library calls.
I'm not really familiar with that and the Tutorial section doesn't explain
it adequately. I'm hoping it's explained better further on in the manual.

I don't know what the inside margin is, but if you take it to a full
service print shop you may be able to get them the guillotine the binding
off. If they know what they're doing then you should only lose about 1/8"
from your margin, then have them drill it and get yourself a 3 or 5 ring
binder

Please do Dominick! Although I don't do much with Basic anymore unless I
need that quickie utility in a hurry, I'll probably send off for the
upgrade myself. I've written a few utilities using ACE, but it creates
bloated executables since it doesn't use a shared library.
