I just bought a Media Vision CDROM Drive from Creative. I got the Asimware
Driver that was bundled with the drive. The driver apparently works just with
2.0/2.1 Workbench… Is there anythingavailable that will work with 1.3 ? I
have the 2.0 workbench, but currently don't have enough room on the drive to
install it. I would like to use the CDROM before I have to buy a larger hard
drive and re-install everything….. I also downloaded a copy of AmiCD, By
Frank Munkert, but the instructions for it are VERY confusing for a semi-novice
like me…. Can Anybody Help Me ???? THANKS,

I currently use ASIMCDFS 2.0 which works just fine on my 4000.
If you don't have the most current version call Asimware.
BTW those Creative guys have changed their recording on their
tech support number to "one of the largest MAC wharehouses in
California." They even only have ONE amiga techie to answer
calls now!!! (Looks like someone sold out BIG time).

Seems the Rat has started to scurry towards the quarterdeck.
I don't think their going to get much more of my business.
I called in once with a simple question and the "Amiga" was
always out. The other MAC technicians could point at an
amiga little alone find one IN Creative Computers. Sounds
to me to be BIG sell out time by CC.
Oh well when the Amiga comes back full force then what?? I
say give you business to others. Let them feel the error
of their ways especially when Apple decides the Quadra was
just a test project. "Oh we don't support that any more…
so sorry you just spent over $3000 on a machine that we are
moving away from."

Heh, heh. Just had the same problem. Ordered some Amiga parts from Tenex
and had a tech question so was referred to "Thomas," the Amiga expert.
When he didn't call back in a few days, I called in. Seems he was recently
laid off, and now IBMers are trying to answer Amiga questions. Geez.

That reminds of when I bought my Maxtor drive, several months ago, from
PCFixx (PC and Mac! place). I asked the guy if I could get the specs for
the SCSI ID jumpers…Just a second…he comes back with 'the SCSI
expert', I ask for the SCSI ID jumpers again, "OH! You mean the master
slave jumper? It's probably that one right there." Geez. At least I found
out more info about that drive than I'll ever need to know from the folks
here.

You won't have trouble getting SCSI or Amiga questions answered at MegageM!
I'm still sticking with Amiga-oriented service and support for Amiga customers
who've kept me in business and paid my bills. I like my Amiga customers, and
BTW I keep a copy of the 'hard drive encyclopedia' around to answer just those
kinds of jumper questions for customers … Not all Amiga specialists are
jumping ship! Those big guys have to keep major huge amounts of cash rolling
in to pay for those huge catalogs and multipage color ads – so those switches
to IBM and MAC are made quickly and ruthlessly. OTOH, MegageM keeps overhead
low and wants to stick with Amiga if at all possible – that's the customer base
that has purchased software, hard drives, CDROMs, etc. from MegageM so that's
where MegageM will keep up solid support. Consider supporting some of the
smaller companies that have a lower profile and I think you'll find others like
me still responding well to the Amiga community's needs.
Actually, I do try to support my local Amiga dealers. Just 'cause of all
the things you mention. I haven't bought anything from you guys, but it's
been a whole lot easier to support my local Amiga dealer now that I have
one 4 blocks from work (rather than 30 miles). He has only been open a few
months and I've bought several items from him, even though I could save a
considerable amount through mail order. One reason is impulse, if I want
it I want it now. The main reason is support. Support for me, support for
the dealer, and support to the Amiga community. I actually bought that
hard drive as a result of searching for a NEC monitor and finding a great
deal on a drive. I didn't figure they'd be able to help me, but I got a
lot of laughs (to myself) watching them trying to deal it and act like
they really knew what they were talking about.
I've heard only good things about MegageM. I'm sure we'll be in contact at
some point.

PMFJI, but I drove past Software Plus here in Chicago, and it has
disappeared. FOR SALE signs everywhere.
Only a couple weeks ago I was there checking out CD32 stock. They were
getting bought out as fast as they could get it in.
Another one bites the dust….just thought you'd be interested.

Hmmm. Are you sure about Software Plus? They told me about a week ago they
were moving down the street, over toward Arby's restaurant. And I just
spoke with one of the staff about three days ago. I believe their phone
messaging system is still on line.

No, I'm not sure. And, come to think of it, you probably have a better
clue about this than myself.
Driving past their location the other day and seeing a FOR RENT sign gave
me a heavy feeling, though. 🙂 I didn't make any formal attempt to call or
verify that they had closed. My mistake.

They're open, Stephen, but the "Moved To.." sign got yanked down for some
reason. They are now in smaller quarters in the PSI building across the
street from Arby's on Peterson, in the back of the building on the second
floor. No sign, yet, just a listing on the lobby directory. They're still
handling multiple platforms and carry a stock of software and such, but
are aiming more to become computer consultants.

I won't reveal my source in any way but the honcho almost panicked immed-
iately and took the thing belly up. He was going to do nothing but mail order,
then changed his mind. Where he is going from here I don't know. This was
immediately after the CBM news at the end of April. He was already backing off
from Amiga having turned the Amiga operation into Macintosh and putting Amiga
into smaller quarters in the Lawndale store.
