AARGH! Is their any way to do refraction in 3DS. I saw an example of a
magnifying glass FLC produced by REALM Production Services on the Inside 3D
Studio CD ROM but I can't figure out hew it was done. Any ideas? Is their an
*XP routine I can buy?

i know of two ways:
A:
1)-you position the camera with a very wide angle lens in place of the
refracting object with the same movement. render the animation from this
cameras point of view.
2)-then replace the opject with the camera and map the object with the
animation you rendered in step one.
this will creat the effect.
B:
render the only background of the object. use this image on a projector light
and exclude everything but the object from the light. position the light so
that it projects the image on the object. work with the scale of the background
image to get the proper effect.

Michael, Hi there. Glad you liked the magnifying glass effect. I'm the one who
did that animation and I'll share the technique I used. It's actually pretty
simple to do. First of all create your "lens" and assign it a 100% auto
reflective material. Make your piece of "paper" and assign a map to it (in this
case it was a pic of a house I did). Basically, you now have the magnifying
glass sitting over your piece of paper. The trick is to make a copy of the
paper and place it _above_ the magnifying glass. Don't forget to flip it over
so your maps are aligned correctly. Flip the surface normals of your top piece
of paper so at render time you won't see it. What happens is the magnifying
glass will reflect the top piece and make it look like it's magnifying the
bottom one. The top piece needs to be closer to the lens than the bottom one so
it appears to be actually magnifying the image. I hope this is a fairly clear
explanation. Good luck with it. BTW – It's Realm Professional Services not

I was reading how you did the magnifying effect and I understood everything
till the part of flipping the normals and you lost me after that. Is there any
way that you can explain this to me a little more simpler?

PMJI, but if you do as David suggests, then you will have this object (a plane)
floating above the magnifying lens, but most likely, in FRONT of the camera.
So, you use Surface/Normals/Object Flip to point the normals down towards the
lens and, thus, away from the camera. Poof, the plane becomes invisible to the
camera, as the map you apply should be one-sided and you're looking at the
object's back — BUT, the object WILL be "visible" to the lens, which will
reflect it.

Well, I give up–where is it, David?! The CD-ROM that came with my book had a
scant 5 flc's on it–backhoe, catalog, bball, jump, and ghostfin…period.
Where is yours hiding out? <g>
Carl, Actually it's not on the Inside 3DS book. Whoever asked that question in
the first place said the wrong book title. It is on Nancy Fulton's book – 3D
Studio Applied. Sorry for any trouble. I uploaded a file to the forum called
MAG zip that will show what we were talking about though. It doesn't have any
animation and needs tweaking but it is a good starting point.
