#Hair/fur materials

Have you seen the JUJU SHAMPOO mock-commercial (by Mr Film, I think)? That is
truly the greatest hair in any 3D animation, IMHO. Makes the Polar Bears look
like caca. We're talking long, flowing, realistic… incredible!!! Looks like
some sort of particle effect to me, but the result is immaculate. It was part
of last year's Siggraph Electronic Theater.

John, the JuJu piece was done by Metrolight. Definitely the best hair ever
rendered.
The face was one of the scariest rendered faces I've ever seen too. Nice
decaying-flesh shader.
– G
Wasn't that hair a RMan shader ?
BILL
I don't know, but I know the TD who did the shot and will ask him the next time
I see him.
– G
Thanks, just curious.
BILL
Ah, yes… Metrolight. I've got the video in front on me now…
Yes, definitely a nice decaying flesh shader.

John….
Is that a demo video? How can I order one?
Thanx….
SW…
The video I've got is last year's Siggraph Electronic Theater video…
I'm sure you can order it through Siggraph ACM.
Hi, John, My name is Fred Nilsson, I'm an animator at RGA-NY, I have used 3D
studio in the past, in fact it's what I started on. So I visit this forum
often to find out whats goin on.
The programmers at RGA have and are still working on several hair
projects. They look great. We have done insect fur. As well as swinging
around hair , as in the JU JU commercial. Our way of doin it , involved a
string of particles. It really works well, … Who knows maybey some guys
will soon develop a simmilar technique for 3DS.
Fred Nilsson
Fredrik, did RGA do the Polar Bear commercials?
– G
I think I saw something last night that said it was "Rhythm and Hues".
Maybe that wasn't, but they -were- the ones that animated the talking
cat in that -awful- movie "Hocus-Pocus"…. they did all that hair by digitized
mapping… slick idea, if you've got the equipment.
PMJI, but if you're talking about the bears, it was R&H. What was wrong with
the movie Hocus Pocus ? <g>
BILL
Nothing was wrong, the effects were quite interesting. It was just a
pretty poor excuse for a movie… I mean, they could have put all that money
into explosions and all sorts of violent stuff <G> & <s>
No, that was Rhythm and Hues. Their hair system is different than ours. We
use a strand of particles, to do the hair, It really is cool. But
unfortunately, their is no interface for it . It is all script based. We have
our own renderer, and it was added to it a few months ago, during some
prelimanary testing for a movie. We are figuring out ways to animate in
Softimage, than export a mesh for every frame. Which doesnt seem to be the
best way to do it , but for now it will have to do.
I will do some simple tests with hair on a ball or some other object to show
you guys.
Fred Nilsson
Ahh, the ole particle trick, eh? <g> Sounds pretty tricky.
– G
sounds interesting. I'd love to see the hair you guys are doing.
John Tissavary (LUNA cie)
I will do some tests and upload a few images.
Fred Nilsson
Great! Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the tip, John, I'll keep an eye out for it, but… JUJU
SHAMPOO? Sounds pretty… well… *weird*, but on your
recommendation, sounds like I've gotta go find me some of that weird
shampoo, thanks…. <bg>
