Is there a driver available for 3D studio Rel 3.0 and the Matrox Pro
graphics card? PS:the driver that came with the card doesn't work
properly with the material editor (nothing appears in the material
boxes),with autocad however works as it should.
PSS: my config is:486 DX2 66 / 32 Mb ram / Phillips Brilliance 21 '
monitor / VESA -Localbus Matrox Pro with Z-buffer option installed
advise please?!
Download the latest vibrant in-line driver update from the libraries here –
that will get you built in MGA support.

I use an Illuminator Pro here with no problems. Make sure you have the latest
version of the ADI driver. You might have to call the MATROX BBS to download
it.
When set up properly, all modules work. Is your Materials editor set up for
RDPADI? Or for the VGA board? It should be set up for the VGA board (in the
Vibrant config.), but you can render your sample materials to the frame buffer
using a button in the Materials editor.

Illuminator Pro is not an MGA. The Matrox MGA Pro is based on the MGA-1
chipset, which is supported by the 1.0.3 version of the Vibrant Inline driver.
The Illuminator series is a TARGA-clone, which we don't currently support (we
do support the Targa+).

I'm sure you didn't think about it too much when you wrote it <g>, but the
Illuminator Pro is about as different from the Targa+ as you can get, therefore
the word "clone" is incorrect and misleading. The Illuminator Pro is a
CCIR-601 digital video device with 720x486x24bit fixed resolution, capable of
composite, component, CAV, and D1 output. The Targa+ is an analog device with
512x486x24 limit. I'm not saying one is better or worse than the other,
although the Illuminator is higher rez and D1 capable, just that it's
definitely not a Targa+ clone.

I guess he did. I used a Targa+ for quite a while before switching to the
Illuminator, and I'd hate to think I paid more than twice as much for a "Targa+
clone" as for a Targa <g>.
I know when I first started logging on to this forum I lapped up info on
hardware, software, and tips pretty eagerly, and was burned more than a few
times by inaccurate information which led me to spend money somewhere I
shouldn't have. I just wanted to set the record straight on that one.

Again, I did not mean to spread misinformation. The Illuminator Pro was
mentioned as a response to a message about the Matrox Pro, and I wanted to make
sure that the distinction between the chipsets was clear. The MGA chipset is
used in the Matrox MGA Impression, the Matrox MGA Pro, and Matrox MGA Ultima,
and the Matrox MGA Ultima-Plus. The Matrox Illuminator and Illuminator Pro are
not MGA-based boards. The Vibrant Inline driver supports the MGA boards, but
does not currently support the Matrox Illuminator or Illuminator Pro.
I was lead to belive that these boards are essentially TARGA Classic clones
from the point of view of the programmer–I was not trying to compare the
quality of the board or it's usefulness, mearly the support issues from the
driver's perspective. As such, we probably won't support the Illuminator until
we get TARGA Classic support in place. I also wanted to make it clear that we
DO support Targa+ in the latest driver, which is not the same thing as the
Targa Classic.
Sorry, I was trying to make a short message about these issues, and I failed to
make it clear. Hope this clears things up.

Really, I do understand the point you were trying to make, and I didn't think
you were slagging the card, I just wanted to throw in that it wasn't a Targa
clone. I remember when I was starting out, and heard any tech info on this
forum, I would pretty much take it as accurate and made $$$ decisions based on
it.
Pretty cool that you support the Targa+, but is that as a display device, or as
a seperate rendering display?

I'll say it … the IllPro is DEFINITELY better than the Targa+! (come-on John
.. don't be so shy).

Sorry, what I meant was that the Illuminator (and I therefore assumed the
Illuminator Pro) is a TARGA Classic clone. I mentioned Targa+ because we
support that device, not TARGA Classic.

Ah… now I understand. I don't know much about the Illuminator, other than
that it's a 16bit frame buffer.
