#Pyros sells sales group!

Hello there!
I haven't had much time on the forum this last week, but I wanted to make this
announcement to all my CompuServe ASOFT friends:
Pyros Partnership, Inc, which has always been composed of three divisions;
Animation, Facilities Management, and Hardware/Software Sales, is pleased to
announce that the Hardware/Software sales division has been sold to AMI, a
public company based in New York City.
Greg and Susan Pyros will continue their Animation and Facilities Management
divisions at the same address and phone number.
This means to me that I can spend 100% of my time creating animations and
staying out of the hardware and software sales business. Gus and I will also
continue custom programming and IPAS development, as well as providing
rendering and tape output services.
It was a great ten years of sales, but it is time to move on. Besides, they
made us an offer we couldn't refuse! <bg>
For those who have purchased from us in the past, the same great sales and
technical support people will answer the phones when you call. This should
also give me more time to get back on ASOFT, at least in between deadlines!
I'll be back providing my usual sick humor and hopefully some assistance after
July 1st!

Seagate has a pretty straight forward warranty on their drives. That particular
drive has a 3 year warranty doesn't it? We have one on a workstation and it's
been phenomenally stable for a while now. I haven't heard of any other
problems. Are you using it with your Suns or PC's ? We had to divide ours into
two 4.5 gig partitions because IRIX maxes out at 8 gig. But after getting it
online it's been great.
I have been struggling with PCNFS though. I've temporarily dropped back to
ftp'ing files back and forth from the PC's to the SGI's.

The Seagate Elite-9 drive has a 5 year warranty with a 48 hour swap, however,
it is so new that the swap policy starts in July! We got one of the first
ones, how did you get one a while ago?
Sun normally maxes out at 2 gigs, but they have a program called DiskSuite that
basically allows unlimited disk sizes, in addition to concatenating different
disks into one huge drive transparently and allowing mirroring and hot swaps if
necessary. It was sure nice to see that 9 gigs out there, if only for a while!
What's your problem with PC-NFS? I don't sell it anymore <bg>, but I can sure

Actually not only do I have one, everybody I know has one. I know of at least
12 different places that are running them. Maybe we're not talking about the
same drive. Seagate Elite-9 ST410800N?
If so they've been shipping for a while now. All of the local military
installations have multiple ones connected together. The oldest one I know of
has been running for almost 5 months at NASA. I just called to confirm that
they had the same drive. Extremely solid drives. We're getting another one
installed in a new workstation that's being delivered next week. $4500
pre-formatted to 9Gig (2 4.5 Meg partitions) in an External Case. I also know
of a person who had one swapped out overnight due to a shipping damage problem,
but I'm not sure if he got the replacement from Seagate or the vendor.
I can give you the names of at least 4 vendors who have them in stock with
overnight shipping. If that's an option for you.
As to the NFS problem, I think alot of it is just a lack of time to page
through the 9 manuals. 🙂 I have it up and running and I have a SGI server
communicating with it, but I'm only FTP'ing the data back and forth at the
moment. It's my understanding that the PC's can only serve as clients and
there's not a way to pull up file directories from the PC on the workstation.

NFS works based on a "client" and "server" modules. Normally, you run a nfs
daemon on the SGI making it a server and then you would run nfs client software
on the PC to use the SGI as the server. In order for the PC to act as a NFS
server, you will need to install appropriate software. You're probably using
PCNFS from Sunsoft. That package does not include a "server" module. It's sold
primarily to use as client of Sun servers. There are however, a couple of
packages out there that include NFS server modules for the PC. The great thing
about this is its transparency. If you give my server address to your nfs
configuration, you could mount my local disks (either Sun or PC's) as if they
were right there. All this by just adding a single line to your /etc/server.
On the PC I use Netmanage's Chameleon. It has, among several things, a NFS
server module. I would look for something else if this is all you want. This
package is a bit spendy just for that.

I've got SunSelect PC-NFS running here and I sorta guessed that it wouldn't let
the PC run as a server. 🙁 It was $315 for a single copy, how much is
Chameleon?
We currently run NFS on all of our workstations. It's absolutely fantastic. It
would really be nice to have the PC's as servers so that I could send stuff
back and forth without having to go into the other room to the PCs.
I currently have the SGI part of NFS running flawlessly, everything's setup,
automatic transfers, backups, you name it. Now if I could only gain more
control of the PC's.

The product I use is Chameleon/NFS (Version 4.0). It's put out by a company
called Netmanage. It costs $495.00. It's a complete TCP/IP package for the PC
(includes, besides NSF server/client, mail, ftp, telnet, gopher, ping, finger,
the usual stuff…)

There is another product out there called SuperTCP/NFS by a company called
Frontier Technologies Corp. I don't know anything about this other than its
name.
