CBM and SAMSUNG Status

I phoned Samsung's New Jersey offices today, the 13th of June, and got a arke
ting" person who confirmed that there are "discussions" ongoing with CBM, or
the "responsibles" remaining but no official announcement had yet been made…
for what it's worth IMHO there is not much time left for them to make a move.
The pace of the Big players (IBM/Apple/HP/Microsoft) in their headlong race for
the set top box which we'll all use to get on the Info Highway is increasing at
a furious pace. If they are able to conclude a deal by month's end, they still
have a significant chance. Let's continue to hope and let the potential owners
know that we'll continue to support Amiga technology. I know I will (A2000
owner since '87, running on 2.1 and loving the Toast). Ron Sulliuan

Dear Samsung,
I'm a curious computer owner and want to know what your long range business
plan is regarding the Amiga Computer. I undertand that you normally conclude
negotiations, have your legal types check things out then marketing/public
relations gets the word out, but I'd like you to tell me directly.
Of course you will also receive many calls, letters, and faxes from hundreds of
other people like me. Please take the time to, off the record, tell us what's
going on. We hope that you take the hundreds of calls as an idicator of our
interest and proof that, while interested, we are not fanatics.
The guy at my local gas station has been up front about secret details
concerning the Exxon oil spill legal settlement, and I hope that you will be as
forthcoming about the secret Samsung/Commodore talks.
Rest assured that I'm a loyal Amgia owner and satified Samsung bread machine
owner, and won't even leak a tiny bit about what you tell me.

You must have misunderstood. I do not work for Samsung, I just live near
their headquarters and posted their address for someone. You should mail
your post to them via US mail.

You misunderstood! <grin> I was just being a little over-the-top in a post. I
tried to be as obvious as I could and look like on of the 100's of annoying
letters they must be flooded with now.
I pity the poor Samsung people who get these letters, calls, and faxes and can
answer nothing because they don't know anything and their lawyers would prevent
them telling if they did.
Still hoping for the best, but not expecting anything until the press says
something offical.

I not THAT sure that Samsung is the One who will take over C=… Just
because it takes quite a long time, which is not normal in that situation,
just because Samsung are involved in several companies/projects including
3DO etc. From a marketing point of view, I just don't understand how they
could afford dealing with two competiting machines… I don't think they
could do something like selling CD32 in Europe and 3DO within the US…
Well, I tend to be negative these days, as we've all been waiting for more
than 1 month now!

One rumor that's going around is that they're just going to sell Amiga chipsets
to third-party manufacturers.

I'm glad to hear the info, but while it's also killing me not knowing what's
happening, don't get too excited by the talk of set top boxes. They may pan
out and be the Coming Thing, but a month or two isn't going to make much of a
difference, especially if Samsung buys C+. Samsung (like everyone else) is
already working on alliances and deals with cable systems to try and get them
to push Samsung's product on their customers, but it's still going to be a
while before any of these things show up in significant market penetration, and
whoever goes first is going to run into all the obvious mistakes that are only
apparent from a product in the field, paving the way for everyone else.

I saw a video clip on a news show the other day that I SWEAR had an assembly
line with PC's sliding down rollers and being packed into boxes. The PC's had
SAMSUNG stamped on them. Had a footprint like a cross between a Sun and a 4000.
I even turned to my sig. other and remarked about how weird it was because a) I
didn't know Samsing did PC's and b) all the rumors about the
resurrection…Does Samsung actually do PC clones at all right now? It was real
weird…
Samsung at one time had its own line of PC's. I don't know if they still do.
Could be that you were seeing stock footage from an earlier date.

I did a little research in the business-side of CIS the other day –
Samsung was listed as making a few clones, but I don't know how old the
info was. Might try going down the 'go reference' path from the top menu
and see where that leads…

Just to put that in some bizzare relative perspective, that means they had
sales of around $65 Billion last year.
Their sales and profit trends have been extremrly positive (meaning,
incresed sales and increased profits) and their stock has jumped 30% or so
since last October/November.

This item number 8 must be a critical component in Samsung's interest in the
Amiga.

I did see an ad selling there monitors. One of the monitors was sitting on top
of, what I belive is, a Samsung PC. Yes, it was in the latest issue of "PC
Magazine".
