I guess that Expert Systems now has the rights to distribute 3.1 Roms and
Workbench to ALL Amiga users! Don't have their number, but they got the
distribution rights 6/15/94. I think the upgrade is around $120 for the
3000/4000 and around $100 for 2000/500. No, I don't have their number.

Have you gotten the upgrade yet? I'm waiting to hear from someone how it

Anyone know which versions of the Kickstart and Workbench that Expert
Systems is distributing? And yes, I know it's 3.1 but what versions <g>

Well that's a little newer than the Kickstart and Workbench versions I'm
using, but I'm having a hard time swallowing the price of $150 for 2 ROM
chips plus 6 or 7 disks.

Do I understand correctly that the 3.1 upgrade is a Kickstart ROM and

The version that Expert Services is selling, yes.
I guess my next question is; what does ADOS 3.1 do that 2.1 doesn't? I
thought I had heard that the main difference is enhanced CDROM support.
Also, are there any serious compatibilty problems when using 3.1 in a
Zorro II machine (like my accelerated A2000?) I assume AutoPilot works
with 3.1 <g>.

I called and ordered already! Though they told me there would be no
A500 kit as they felt there isn't enough CPU to run it efficiently. It
may also be that it was developed with the A1200(68020) and the older
up-scale(accelerated) market in mind? I thought I'd tell people what I
was told. I am sure someone will figure out how to use a A2000 kit in a
500 though.

The A2000 kit is exactly what you need for an A500. I can't think of a
single thing that would be different except for the instructions on how to
update your A500 ROM.

I'm sure thats true, but it seems to me that it would be real slow on a
68000, but then everything is.<G> I can understand what he was implying,
that more 2000s are accelerated than 500s

3.1 is going to be FASTER, not slower, than any previous release on any
hardware you run it on, barring some bug I haven't heard of. There are
lots of optimizations.
BTW, I just remembered that there are going to be problems with 3.1 on
some A500s, the same way as there is with 2.04, maybe 2.05. On some
A500s, you have to connect two pins on the ROM (that is a problem you'd
have with any 2.04 or greater ROM). On others (old ones), 2.05 has a
compatibility problem. I'm not sure if that problem would be gone in a
3.1 ROM, cause I don't remember the problem.

Would this A500 ROM problem exist on an A500plus, which is after all an
A600 in an old fashioned box??

Unabashed plug alert!! To use a ROM kit for an A2000 in revision 5
A500's, all you need to do is use the MultiStart II ROM switcher. We
designed it to take care of the little wiring problem that the older
A500's had.

I've read a few different things, but I wanted to ask you, because I
trust your opinion. Can I use 3.1 with an A2500. I'm using your MultiStart
II and MegaChip 2000 boards with it. If so, what exactly does the upgrade
consist of and should I expect any problems or incompatibilities with
using it?

As a developer, I've been using some version of 3.1 with an A2500 for a
year. Of course it works and you shouldn't expect any incompatibilities.

Dale: When the OS changed last time, new ROMs were required for the A2630
accelerator. Will new ROMs be required for this board to go from 2.1 to OS 3?

A few more datatypes (I think). Not sure what else.
The more important question is what is in 3.0 that's not in 3.1. A: a lot
of bugs.
