#Upgrade Woes

We've recently upgraded our Toaster 2.0 to 3.1 and added an Amilink A/B edit
controller. Besides the serial port conflict between the Amilink and TBC's,
everything seems to work very well unless you try to load CG in Toaster while
Amilink is active. If CG is loaded first, Amilink will load, but setup and
patchbay within Amilink will not. TDE's will not load either, not enough
memory.
Well, we have 17 mgs of ram, (1) 50 mg hard drive and (1) 290 mg hard dirve,
but only 1 mg of chip ram. My dealer insists that should be enough unless I'm
planning to do alot of high end animation.
The Amilink customer service rep says a Mega Chip 2000 is the solution. My
dealer says I need to repartition my hard drives. Your feedback is greatly
appreciated, my editing backlog is begining to grow.

Go for the MegaChip, I don't see how reformatting the HDs could help.
Seems to be the solution, my dealer called back (miracles of miracles) an
confirmed that the Mega Chip is needed. They tell me the megachip is on 8 weeks
backorder.
Would unloading 3.1 and loading 2.0 leave me with enough chip ram to get some
work done in a reasonable amount of time?

I've learned to plan ahead. By making CG pages ahead of time and saving them as
framestores gives me access. I also load each program separately, configure for
the projects needs and reload. The Megachip is on the way.

Micheal,
How many fonts are your carrying in the "book" that opens when you load
the CG? If its a ton, you may want to create a different project with
book that has few or none open and try to remove any that you test but
don't use along the way.
If that doesn't help, then you have no choice but to revert to Toaster 2.0
or wait for the MegAchip.

I've only got a half dozen fonts in the book. I have found that if I plan
carefully I can work around the problem. It does mean making CG pages ahead of
time, saving them as framebuffers. It also means setting up each program in the
configuration separately and reloading in a specific order. No changes
allowed,
I did find a dealer who had Megachips in stock, the item was shipped last
Monday,
should be here by now.

Get the Meg-A-Chip. It solved a similir problem with loading CG for me. Also, I
believe it says in the 3.x manual that you need 2 megs of chip RAM. Regards,

My dealer finally agrees the Megachip is the solution. They also tell me the
megachip is eight weeks on backorder. would you know if using 2.0 with the
Amilink wil leave me with enough chip ram to get some work done.

Michael, I'm not sure how the Amilink ties in wuth the chip RAM usage. I do
seem to remember that the 3.x Toaster CG is the most problamatic in this
regard, so if you need to use the CG, using Toaster 2.0 might be the way to go
while you are waiting. Have you tried the mail order houses? Regards, Gary

I should read all my messages before responding, you'll have another response
to your initial message. I did find a mail order house in PA. that was not
aware of a backorder problem and promised to ship last week. Have not received
MegaChip yet, will followup tomorrow. I've been working around the problem, but
it's really testing what little patience I have. I've knocked out what had to
get out, so I should have some time this next week to load 2.0 if the chip
evaporates.

My Mega Chip supplier did not have product in stock as promised. Chip is on
backorder. No one seems to have any idea when they will become available. Tried
loading 2.0 to work around the problem, created more headaches than it solved.
I guess we'll just have to wait.

The Megachip is on order. I can't find 2mg requirement in the manual, doesn't
really matter though.

Tape's on the way.
Not more business than I could handle (hey, you know what part of the country
we're in!), but a bad SIMM that only showed up during harddrive writes and when
I needed the system the most. Very frustrating, like most Amiga-related
activities. Of course, I use Windoze, too, so I really must be a glutton for
it!

Recieved your demo reel yesterday, some very nice stuff. I have some industrial
clients who can use your technical animations in their product reels. I will
definetly keep you in mind for some sub work when the opportunity arises.
There is enough competition and business in NWO without messin' with the big
boys. We focus on providing production services to businesses who want to focus
on content and don't necessarily need Betcam quality and pricing. We believe we
are expanding the market by being able to provide a new tool to companies that
thought video was out of their reach.
I'm hoping our clients will outgrow us and move up to higher end formats, if
thats what they need. Maybe the big boys would be a little more cooperative if
they thought of small outfits like mine as self funded market developement
departments, rather than pesty horseflies that won't go away.

BTW, there's about three or four others around here using Toasters for various
purposes. I might see if we could all meet sometime. Maybe somewhere central
like John Rerucha's studio (Heatherdowns and Key).
Had one guy near you need a bunch of rendering recently while my system was
down, and could've had him give you a buzz.

BTW2, know what you mean about video being unexplored. Just got a Marketing
book catalog today, had over fourty books but only two videos listed. Some of
the topics just screamed "tape me!" Makes you wonder how 'expert' they are…
